Abstract
A grid electrode comprises at least a surface layer of orientated graphite applied so that its maximum heat conductivity is generally parallel to the surface. The grid may comprise a core of ordinary commercial graphite coated with orientated graphite by heating to 1500 DEG C. or more in a hydrocarbon, e.g. methane, acetylene or benzene. Alternatively, the grid may be constituted entirely of orientated graphite, an ordinary graphite core being coated as above and subsequently separated from the deposited coating.
