[Also in Division F2] A gyroscope in which the rotor is supported in hydrodynamic gas bearings comprises an axial journal bearing (between the rotor 1 and a spindle 2 supported towards each end from a frame 5 ) and a pair of thrust bearings (between cooperating faces 3, 7 and 4, 8) each having one or both surfaces figured to form a shear pump operating to raise the pressure of the gas in the journal bearing. The rotor casings (carrying the support frames) is sealed and contains gas at less than atmospheric pressure.
