Abstract

963,175. Gyroscopic apparatus. GENERAL PRECISION Inc. Nov. 6, 1962 [Nov. 7, 1961], No. 41977/62. Heading G1C. [Also in Division F2] A gyroscope rotor 13 is supported by two pairs of co-operating frusto-conical surfaces 14, 24 and 25, 26, with the interposition of a layer of gas which is generated when the rotor 13 is brought up to speed by its electric motor. The rotor comprises a brass or gold ring 15 supported by the flanges 20, 21 of a pair of central sections 16, 17 of aluminium alloy or beryllium which are secured together at 23 and which have the frustoconical surfaces 24, 25. The surfaces 14, 26 are provided on members 11, 27 which are secured together and carry the stator 10 of the rotor drive motor co-operating with hysteresis ring 40 on the rotor 13. The frusto-conical surfaces 14, 24, 25, 26 are coated with a thin facing of ceramic material a plurality of trapezoidal shaped depressions being provided in surfaces 24, 25 to entrap air or gas to increase the bearing capacity.
