Abstract
1,010,822. Motor scooters. TRIUMPH ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. April 16, 1963 [April 18, 1962], No. 14987/62. Addition to 809,968. Heading B7H. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] In a motor scooter or like vehicle the engine 10, belt drive with pulleys of variable effective diameter, reduction gearing 58, 60 and rear wheel 12 are mounted on a yoke 78 pivoted at 80 to brackets 96 on the vehicle frame. Pivoting. is controlled by a combined teleseopie/spring- unit. The front pulley, on engine shaft 17, has a fixed flange 18 and a bushed flange 22 sliable on sleeve 23. The axial position of flange 22 is determined by the interaction of centrifugal flyballs 49 and springs 42 mounted between plate 32 on shaft 17 and plate 38 which, is retained by cotter pins 44 on pins 34 secured to flange 22. Until a predetermined engine speed is reached belt 46 rests on the outer race 48 of bearing 26 without transmitting any power. The rear pulley has a flange 64 secured to shaft 56 and a bushed slidable flange 72 the position of which is determined by the interaction of the belt tension and the force of spring 76. The yoke 78 comprises two pressings welded together and strengthened by tubes 80, 82, 84. A switch 114 is provided (see Division F1) to cut out the engine when it is being started should its speed be sufficient to engage the drive.
