Abstract

Compounds of formula <FORM:1009791/C2/1> wherein X is halogen and n is 1 or 2, are pre pared by reacting (a) phosphorus pentahalide or phosphorus oxyhalide or (b) phosphorus pentahalide in phosphorus oxyhalide or tri halide with a compound of formula <FORM:1009791/C2/2> or <FORM:1009791/C2/3> where n is 1 or 2, e.g. 2,3-dichloro-5-nitro-quinoxaline. The compounds are used topically in medicine and in agriculture against fungal and bacterial pathogens.ALSO:A microbicidal composition for pharmaceutical and agricultural application comprises at least one compound of formula <FORM:1009791/A5-A6/1> wherein X is halogen and n is 1 or 2 and a pharmaceutical or pesticidal solid or emulsion carrier. Typical compounds are 2, 3-dichloro-6-nitro-quinoxaline, 2, 3-dichloro-5, 7-dinitro-quinoxaline and 2, 3-dichloro-5-nitro-quinoxaline. For pharmacutical application the compositions may be used in the form of dusting powders, ointments and paints. For agricultural application emulsions, wettable powders and dusts are suitable.
