Abstract

Heading H2B. [Also in Division F2] In an hydraulic braking system (Division F2) a switch unit 21 may be provided on the lower part of the vehicle bulkhead 10 and comprises a slidable plunger 23, operated when the brake pedal is depressed, an annular contact block 26 and two electrical switch plungers 33 connected to an indicator lamp mounted on the vehicle dashboard. When the pedal is in its off position the contact block 26 is urged by a spring 25 against an end wall 39 of the body of the switch unit and in this position the two switch plungers 33 bear against the insulating ring 29 so that the lamp is not illuminated (Fig. 2). As the brake pedal is depressed it bears against the switch plunger 23 to move the latter against the action of the spring 25 together with the contact block 26 until the switch plungers 33 bear on conductive contact 32 to close the lamp circuit. This indicates to the driver that the hydraulic system is in an efficient state. Should partial failure occur the brake pedal may move on to the position wherein an insulating ring 30 is in contact with the switch plungers 23 so that the lamp circuit is closed only momentarily. If complete failure occurs, the brake pedal will be pushed down to the bulkhead so that the insulating ring 30 will move past the switch plungers 33 which will then contact an electrically conductive stop collar 27 so that the lamp is illuminated and the switch is locked in this position until the defects are rectified (Fig. 3). Instead of switch plungers 33, resilient blade contacts may be provided (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown).
