Abstract

1,008,760. Hydrodynamic torque converters. ELEKTRO - MECHANIK - G.m.b.H. June 15, 1962 [June 20, 1961], No. 23110/62. Heading F2C. Oil is supplied to the working circuit of a hydrodynamic torque converter upstream of the pump at a radius greater than the minimum radius of the working circuit, and maintains the pressure in the circuit at the point of introduction at a desired value. This results in a lowering of the pressure in the working circuit in the vicinity of the converter axis under stall and near stall conditions. The radial distance of the point of introduction may be varied manually or automatically and the pressure at which the oil is introduced may also be varied. In one embodiment oil is introduced through a pipe 28 and a passage in a rotatable cylinder 32 to an eccentric port 33 opening into the converter working circuit. Rotation of the cylinder 32 by a lever 34 thus varies the distance of the port 33 from the axis of the converter. The pressure in the working circuit in the vicinity of the port 33 is maintained at the pressure at which the oil is supplied, and with the output shaft 22 stationary or rotating slowly the pressure in the vicinity of the converter axis is reduced below atmospheric and air passes through the oil seals 24 to reduce the filling of the converter and hence reduce the torque transmitted. In a modification filling oil is introduced through a tube which is adjustable radially of the converter to vary the point of admission of fluid to the circuit. In other embodiments the point of admission of fluid to the circuit may be fixed, and the oil seals 24 instead of being in the vicinity of the axis of the converter, may be in the vicinity of the point of introduction of fluid to prevent entry of air into the working circuit, thus maintaining a constant filling of the working circuit but still reducing the pressure at stall in the vicinity of the converter axis.
