Abstract
b ,b 1 - dicyano - diethyl - ether is prepared by reacting acrylonitrile with water at a temperature of 40 DEG to 70 DEG C. in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, the amount of water being 100 to 400% in excess of the stoichiometric amount, acidifying the reaction mixture and separating unreacted starting materials and inorganic salts, separating the reaction mixture into three fractions by fractional distillation, the first fraction boiling below 150 DEG C., the second fraction boiling at 150 DEG to 165 DEG C., and the third fraction boiling above 165 DEG C., if distilled under a vacuum of 5 mm. Hg., and purifying the second fraction by extraction with water and drying, if desired. In a preferred embodiment, practically the whole of the third fraction and at least a part of the first fraction are returned to the reaction of acrylonitrile with water. When the process is performed continuously, the middle fraction may be dissolved in an organic solvent, which is practically insoluble in water, has a specific gravity higher than that of water, is miscible with the product ether and has a boiling point below that of said ether, prior to extraction with water and the ether recovered from the organic phase by, for example, distillation. The aqueous solution from the extraction step may be recycled to the fractionating step. Specified catalysts are the alkali metal and alkaline earth metal hydroxides and salts of weak acids.
