Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1006340/C2/1> wherein Ar is a phenyl group, Ar1 is a phenyl or halophenyl group, Z is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy group, and R is an alkyl, phenyl, hydroxyphenyl, dialkylaminoalkoxyphenyl, cyanophenyl, 3,4 - methylenedioxyphenyl, naphthyl, 2 - hydroxy - 1 - naphthyl, pyridyl, 4-quinolyl, or thienyl radical. The preferred halophenyl group is chlorophenyl. Suitable values for R are methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl or hexyl radicals. The compounds are prepared by contacting an amine of the formula <FORM:1006340/C2/2> with an aldehyde of the formula RCHO. The reaction may be effected in the presence of an inert solvent and can be promoted by use of an elevated temperature or by catalytic amounts of a mineral or organic acid or by excess of the aldehyde reactant. Examples describe the preparation of 4-(p-chloro-a -phenylbenzyl)-1-ethylidene - aminopiperidine and 4 - (p - chloro - a - phenylbenzyl) - 1 (4 - pyridylmethylene-amino)-piperidine. Numerous other compounds, characterized by their melting points, are specified. The amines of the formula II are made by nitrozation and reduction of the compounds of the formula <FORM:1006340/C2/3> the meta-isomers of which are obtained by reacting 3-benzoylpipyridine with the appropriate Grignard reagent and reducing the resultant a - (optionally substituted phenyl)-a -phenyl-3-pyridine-methanol
