In a multi-car lift system, means are provided for measuring continuously the differential of travel times of the cars on their upward travels as compared with their downward travels and for automatically selecting an operating programme, such as for "up-peak", " down-peak " or " up-down " operation, in dependence upon the relationship between the measured differential and a predetermined differential. In the described embodiment, a grid condenser of a triode is subjected to a positive charging potential by each descending car and a negative charging potential by each ascending car and discharges to earth when a car or cars is or are standing at the despatching terminal, and the resulting potential of the triode cathode, being a measure of the traffic condition of the system, actuates the appropriate programme selector switches. The charging rate of the condenser is made responsive to the load in each car, irrespective of its direction of travel, by the provision of load responsive switches which, when closed, short-circuit a resistor in the charging circuit of the condenser. The cars are dispatched from the terminal floor at timed intervals which are lengthened or shortened in dependence upon the amount by which the car was early or late as well as upon the magnitude of the dispatching interval then existing, so as to obtain a predetermined spacing between successive cars.
