Abstract

1,004,370. Piston and piston rod packings. GESELLSCHAFT FUR LINDE'S EISMASCHINEN A.G. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 27, 1963], No. 30877/64. Headings F2B and F2T. A seal assembly between coaxial cylindrical surfaces of two machine parts (a cylinder 13 and a piston 14 as shown), Fig. 4, comprises one or more single-piece split sealing rings 20 associated with carrier elements 16 fixed on one of the parts and a supporting ring 19 axially interposed between each sealing ring and its associated carrier element and projecting from the carrier element towards the surface to be sealed to a position in which it is just clear of that surface. The sealing rings 20 are made of carbon or of thermoplastic material, e.g. P.T.F.E., with a friction-reducing filler such as molybdenum disulphide. The sealing rings are urged radially outwardly by springs 21. The supporting rings, which also serve to prevent extrusion of the sealing rings and to conduct heat away, are made of bronze having a high lead content. In a modification, supporting rings are provided on each side of each sealing ring. Fig. 8 shows a sealing assembly between a cylinder (not shown) and a piston-rod 23. The sealing rings are pressed on to the rod by garter springs 28 and the carrier rings 24 are provided with intercommunicating chambers 30 for the circulation of cooling medium. Leakage gases accumulate in a chamber 32 and are removed through a duct 37 connected to the suction side of a compressor or vacuum pump. The chamber 32 is sealed from the atmosphere by split sealing rings 36.
