Abstract

In a method of manufacturing chalices a quantity of glass 1 is fed into a mould 2 provided with a ring to give the glass a rim, said ring being removed and the exposed end of the glass attached to a blow pipe 4, having an internal pressing plunger 10, by grippers 5, the other end of the glass mass 1 then being attached to another blow pipe 7, having internal pressing plunger 11, by grippers 8, the two blowing pipes 4, 7 then being synchronously rotated whilst the plungers 10, 11 make cavities in the glass which on removal of the plungers are blown out in a first blowing operation; the blow pipes and the partially blown out glass are then moved into a horizontal plane and the central portion of the glass mass is formed into a stem 14 by mechanical means 15, e.g. tongs, <PICT:1002927/C1/1> <PICT:1002927/C1/2> <PICT:1002927/C1/3> whilst the two partially inflated end portions are moved outwardly, the viscosity of the glass being controlled by a ring of air jets and burners 17 to 20; after this stretching the glass is enclosed in a final blowing mould wherein one end portion is blown out to form the main receptacle of the chalice and the other end portion a foot. The moil of the foot is melted off and the article trimmed up. In an alternative embodiment both end portions may be blown out to form receptacles, the stem being formed of double length, and after cutting, feet are added separately to the two articles so formed. Several examples of different modifications are shown.
