Abstract

1,002,544. Steering wheels. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 7, 1964 [June 13, 1963], No. 19024/64. Heading B7J. A steering wheel comprises a rim 26, Fig. 2, connected by spokes 24 to a hub, a continuous ornamental metal band 34 disposedin a circumferential groove 32 extending around the region of maximum diameter of the rim, and a resilient member, eg a continuous tube 36 of rubber-like material between the bottom of the groove and the band to resiliently centre the latter with respect to the rim and maintain the external surface of the band substantially flush with the adjacent parts of the surface of the rim. The rim 26 is formed by a metallic spider portion 28 and a hard rubber or synthetic plastic covering 30. The resilient member 36 may be replaced by a solid ring of elastomeric material, a garter spring or a metal zig-zag spring or springs as described with reference to Figs. 3 to 6 (not shown).
