Abstract

A process for the preparation of polyurethanes comprises reacting an organic polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate with a hydroxy reactant comprising a phosphnitrilic polyol ester component and a halogen-containing polyhydroxylic polyether, said hydroxy reactant providing from 0.5 to 3% by weight of phosphorus and from 5 to 30% by weight of halogen based on the weight of hydroxy reactant. The halogen-containing polyether may be the reaction product of a halo-substituted alkylene oxide, e.g. epichlorhydrin with a nucleating agent, e.g. water, propylene glycol or glycerol. An optional polyether not containing halogen may be also added and may be obtained from an alkylene oxide and a nucleating agent. The phosphonitrilic polyol ester component may be prepared by reacting a polyhydric alcohol with a phosphonitrilic halide in quantities such that the corresponding phosphonitrilic polyol ester is formed. A mixture of halides having the general formula (PNCl2)n or (PNBr2)n may be used. Clycols mentioned are: ethylene, diethylene, triethylene, propylene and di-, tri- and tetrapropylene glycols. In an Example (5) a reaction mixture comprising the phosphonitrilic glycol ester of dipropylene glycol and compounds of formula (PNCl2)n, a glycerol epichlor hydrin adduct, tri ethylene diamine, triethylamine, silicane oil, diphenylmethane diisocyanate and citace water or trichlorofluoromethane were foamed in a "one-shot" process to produce a polyurethane foam.
