Abstract

A method of heat-treating a metal comprises placing the metal in a gas-tight chamber 10, <PICT:1001503/C6-C7/1> exhausting the chamber and filling it with an inert gas, e.g. argon through a pipe 64, heating the metal in the inert gas, e.g. by means of radial elements 42, while maintaining the pressure within the chamber at or near atmospheric pressure, e.g. using valve 64B and pressure gauge 64C, and thereafter passing a cooling fluid, e.g. air through a pipe 28 from a fan or air pump, around the chamber from bottom to top to cool the chamber and enable removal of the heat-treated metal. The cooling fluid may be directed either on to the under surface of a baffle plate 24 located in the downward projection of the chamber 10 or into an upwardly opening channel the mouth of which surrounds the downward projection of the chamber, see Fig. 5 (not shown). The peripheral flow of cooling fluid is preferably evacuated, e.g. from the cavity 21 within an outer insulated casing comprising a shell 11 and lining 19, 20, into a conduit 38 peripherally surrounding the upper end of the chamber and opening to the atmosphere, e.g. through a pipe 40. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 908,163.
