Abstract

1,000,840. Paper-making. LODDING ENGINEERING CORPORATION. July 30, 1962, No. 29164/62. Heading D2A. A doctor blade assembly suitable for doctoring a roll 12 in a paper making machine comprises an elongated doctor back member 20, Fig. 2,a doctor blade holder 18 and a doctor blade 16 supported thereon, a journal 26 at each end of the doctor back, a block 34 for each journal 26, a slide plate 36 supporting each block 34, guide ways 38 for the slide plates, a combined hydraulic and pneumatic cylinder 44 connected to each slide plate 36, and means for applying hydraulic fluid to one end of each cylinder to move the plates 36, the blocks 34, the journals 26 &c. substantially rectilinearly in a direction at right angles to the general longitudinal axis of the doctor back member 20 so that the blade 16 is moved to its operative position. Plates 28 are fixedly mounted on the journals 26 and are provided with a series of arcuate slots 30 which receive bolts 32 threaded into the end plates of the back member 20 so as to hold it in an angularly adjusted position relative to the journals 26. The blocks 34 may be adjustably mounted on the plates 36 by means of slots, Fig. 3 (not shown). The guide ways 38 include members 40 which prevent movement of the plates 36 in a vertical direction and members 42 which are so spaced that the plates can move slightly from side to side during the said rectilinear motion forward and back. The rectilinear motion is provided by the cylinders 44 each of which is attached by means of a bracket 58 to the respective plate 36. Air applied to a hydropneumatic intensifier, Fig. 7, (not shown) causes hydraulic fluid to pass through the port 55, Fig. 5, of each cylinder 44 and moves the cylinders to the left, and applies the blade 16 to the roll 12 under equal pressure at both ends. The blade is retracted by applying air to the ports 56 of the cylinders 44. The guide ways 38 are pivoted slightly on studs 68 to provide self-alignment of the ends of the back member 20 regardless of the angularity of the surface of the roll 12 with respect to the edge of the blade.
