Abstract
1,000,272. Launching self-propelled missiles. BRISTOL AEROJET Ltd. Nov. 9, 1961 [Nov. 11, 1960], No. 38916/60. Headings F3A and F3C. A main rocket 20, Fig. 1, is launched from a guide member 1 by means of a launching rocket 11 acting as a booster, the rocket 11 being arranged to separate from the main rocket 20 by the time the rocket 20 leaves the guide member 1. As shown in Fig. 1, the launching rocket 11 engages buffers on shock absorbers 10 secured to the upper end of the guide tube 1 and does not leave the tube but in another embodiment the launching rocket 34, Fig. 5 is tethered to the guide tube 30 by a line 38 and carries a parachute for retarding its flight and controlling its descent. The launching rocket 11, Fig. 1, consists of a cylindrical body 12 with three guide vanes 13, Fig. 3, which run between three pairs of longitudinal guides 14 in the tube 1 and is provided with a ring 23 for engaging the buffers 10. The main rocket 20 is guided inside the tube 1 by three expanded polystyrene sabots 22, Fig. 2, having edges running between the guides 14. When the main rocket leaves the launcher, the sabots fall away and may be re-used. The two rockets may be fired simultaneously or the launching rocket first fired and arranged to fire the main rocket by a jet of hot gas passing through a small hole in the top of the launching rocket into the nozzle of the main rocket. The propellant for the launching rocket consists of plates of cordite contained in a metal case which is removed after each launching.
