Abstract

1,000,118. Container closures. OWENS-ILLINOIS GLASS CO. Oct. 13, 1961 [Oct. 17, 1960], No. 36790/61. Heading B8T. In a container closure assembly a sheet metal cap 11 for hermetic sealing engagement with a glass container comprises a circular panel 20 surrounded by a downwardly open rib 22, a skirt 21 stepped at a ledge 26 lying below the panel, and an annular sealing gasket 12 of elastomeric material secured within the rib 22 and extending from a marginal area of the panel 20 and feathered away at the inner portion of the ledge 26. The full lines in Fig. 3 indicate a possible configuration after a blow on the cap which results in the gasket material flowing downwardly over the container neck 10 and thereby increasing the effectiveness of the hermetic seal. The cap may be screw-threaded or provided with peripherally-spaced lugs 21a.
