Abstract

516,223. Hinges. DETROIT HARVESTER CO. May 25, 1938, No. 15653. Convention date, Feb. 11. [Class 65 (ii)] A door hinge comprises an inclined stem portion 19 rotatably mounted in a socket 23 attached to the door post, a crank portion 20 integral with the stem 19 and a connector portion 21 extending from the crank portion and rotatably mounted in a bearing member 26 attached to the door. The stem 19 lies in a plane parallel with the face of the door, the member 20 lies in a plane inclined at an angle thereto, and the member 21 is slightly inclined to the plane containing the axes of the members 19 and 20. The sides of the socket 25 in the bearing member 26 taper towards the lower end of the socket to substantially the circumference of the arm 21 so that the outer end of the arm 21 may have a rocking movement with respect to the door. A washer 28 locates the arm 21 endwise in the bearing 26. On opening the door 10 the arm 20 will rotate about the pivot 19 and the arm 21 will reciprocate in the slot 25 and the angles at which the arms are set with respect to another will allow the door 10 to be swung clear of the body as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6 and prevent the flange 12 fouling the door post 14. The member 21 is inclined to the plane containing the axes of the members 19 and 20 so that it does not protrude into the trim panel. A modification in which the connector portion is pivoted to the crank portion is shown in Fig. 14. The crank 20a is in the form of a web-shaped member with bearing knuckles 29 supporting a pivot pin to which is attached a sleeve 30 which is in turn connected to door by a screw threaded connector arm 32. The threads cause the arm 32 to move slightly inwards and outwards with respect to the door but also hold in against undesirable axial movement.
