Description
The invention relates to the field of treatment of complex waste comprising organic matter and inorganic matter, such as wet biomass and biowaste, particularly industrial food or agri-food waste, and sludge and sludge from wastewater treatment plants.
The processes of the state of the art attempt to treat heterogeneous matter, that is to say comprising both organic matter and inorganic matter, with a hydrothermal gasification type process.
These hydrothermal gasification type processes suffer from numerous pitfalls, in particular when the waste of biological origin (for example wet biomass) is heterogeneous and/or when it is of high dryness and/or when it has low thermal conductivity. Indeed, this type of process uses heat exchangers, and due to the composition of this biomass, phenomena of clogging of the exchangers can occur.
The efficient recovery of the inorganic material present or resulting from the decomposition of this type of heterogeneous biomass remains a technical-economic challenge in the state of the art of hydrothermal gasification since this separation is not sufficiently selective to recover the different inorganic components (salts, oxides, metals, etc.) separately. As a result, a possible valorization of this inorganic fraction would require numerous post-processing steps and would become low yield and economically unprofitable.
Finally, state-of-the-art processes can generate high thermal consumption and can result in significant construction costs.
Indeed, when the biomass is heterogeneous, of high dryness and of low thermal conductivity, this leads to very significant temperature gradients at the level of the heat exchangers within the biomass matrix leading to undesirable reactions (for example, formation of tar). In addition, the low thermal conductivity leads to a significant increase in the surface area of the exchangers leading to very significant costs.
There is therefore a need to propose a treatment process with high yield and improved selectivity for the recovery of waste containing organic matter and inorganic matter.
The present invention makes it possible to carry out hydrothermal gasification optimizing all the advantages of the latter: transforming complex mixtures containing organic and non-organic solid materials into gaseous, liquid and recoverable solid products. This is thanks to the interconnection of several treatment and selective recovery stages, while minimizing cost constraints thanks to perfect homogenization of the input biomass, in particular due to a drastic reduction in viscosity.

For the purposes of the present invention, the expression “at least a fraction of a mixture or flow” has the same meaning as the expression “all or part of said mixture or flow”. When it concerns a part of said mixture or said flow, this expression refers to a certain proportion of said mixture or said flow. For example, in the sense of this expression “each fraction of the mixture” or “each fraction of the flow” will have the same composition.
Thus, for the purposes of the present invention, the expression "step intermediate stage of separation between stages X and Y, it being understood that there could be cooling/heating of the flow M between stages X and Y, in particular by heat exchange which could possibly involve an exchange of flows.
The mixture M1 comprises at least organic matter. Typically, the mixture M1 also comprises inorganic material. Among the inorganic matter, we can cite salts comprising anions such as phosphates, sulfates, chlorides, carbonates and hydrocarbonates with as counter ions for example sodium, magnesium, calcium, ammonium and metals.
The mixture M1 can for example be chosen from primary, mixed or biological sludge from municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants.
Selon un mode de réalisation, le mélange M1 comprend de 5 à 50% en poids de matières solides, de préférence de 15 à 25% en poids de matière solides, par rapport au poids total du mélange M1.According to one embodiment, the mixture M1 comprises from 5 to 50% by weight of solid materials, preferably from 15 to 25% by weight of solid materials, relative to the total weight of the mixture M1.
Le procédé selon l’invention comprend une étape d’hydrolyse du mélange M1.The process according to the invention comprises a step of hydrolysis of the mixture M1.
The hydrolysis step is carried out at a temperature ranging from 70 to 165°C and at a pressure ranging from 2 to 8 bars. These conditions make it possible to avoid vaporization of the medium.
Selon un mode de réalisation, la température lors de l’étape d’hydrolyse a) va de 100 à 165°C, voire de 140 à 165°C.According to one embodiment, the temperature during hydrolysis step a) ranges from 100 to 165°C, or even from 140 to 165°C.
The hydrolysis step makes it possible to reduce the viscosity of the mixture. Thus, step a) makes it possible to obtain a mixture M1h also called hydrolyzate.
The hydrolysis step makes it possible to degrade the organic matter, in particular it makes it possible to break the chemical bonds and depolymerize the organic matter by the effect of water.
The mixture M1h will typically have a viscosity at least 2 times lower, preferably at least 4 times lower, more preferably at least 10 times lower than the viscosity of the mixture M1.
Ainsi, le ratio entre la viscosité du mélange M1 et la viscosité du mélange M1h est d’au moins 2, de préférence d’au moins 4, de préférence encore d’au moins 10.Thus, the ratio between the viscosity of the mixture M1 and the viscosity of the mixture M1h is at least 2, preferably at least 4, more preferably at least 10.
The viscosity defined in the context of the present invention is a kinematic viscosity which can be measured at the same temperature (20°C for example) using rheometers adapted to the viscosity to be measured (cylinder – cylinder, plane-plane) and by measuring at the same shear (in s -1 ) the two viscosities, typically taking care to eliminate the problems of turbulence and to respect the rheological rules (for example spacing between cylinders depending on the particle size).
The hydrolysis step implemented on the mixture M1 can be implemented in one or more hydrolysis reactors in parallel or in series.
Said hydrolysis step makes it possible to hydrolyze the mixture M1 thanks in particular to maintaining an average hydraulic residence time at the desired temperatures and pressures (in the process of the invention, at temperatures ranging from 70 to 165°C and pressures ranging from 2 to 8 bars), it being understood that if the hydrolysis step is carried out in several hydrolysis reactors, the temperature may be identical or different in the different reactors, likewise, the pressure may be identical or different in the different reactors.
Advantageously, the hydrolysis step will implement an internal energy recovery step, thus making it possible to minimize the thermal consumption of the hydrolysis. For example, there could be an energy recirculation loop from the hot hydrolyzate to the cold product to be hydrolyzed via, for example, production of expansion steam from the hot hydrolyzate and injection into the cold product to be hydrolyzed or heat exchange. .
At the exit of the hydrolysis step, a hydrolyzate M1h is obtained, said hydrolyzate M1h is not necessarily at the desired temperatures and pressures for hydrolysis. Indeed, before leaving the hydrolysis stage, the hydrolyzate could possibly undergo a cooling and/or relaxation stage.
En particulier, par exemple si l’hydrolyse est mise en œuvre à une température élevée, par exemple allant de 100 à 165°C, alors il pourrait être souhaitable de refroidir l’hydrolysat par exemple jusqu’à une température inférieure à 90°C, de sorte à ce que le flux M1h ait une température plus faible pour la mise sous pression dans l’étape b) du procédé de l’inventionIn particular, for example if the hydrolysis is carried out at a high temperature, for example ranging from 100 to 165°C, then it could be desirable to cool the hydrolyzate for example to a temperature below 90°C. , so that the flow M1h has a lower temperature for pressurization in step b) of the process of the invention
The extraction of the M1h hydrolyzate can be controlled by measuring the viscosity.
Selon un mode de réalisation, au moins un additif est ajouté :According to one embodiment, at least one additive is added:
- dans le mélange M1 à traiter avant l’entrée dans le dispositif d’hydrolyse et/ouin the M1 mixture to be treated before entering the hydrolysis device and/or
- dans le mélange pendant l’hydrolyse et/ouin the mixture during hydrolysis and/or
- dans le mélange M1h en aval de l’hydrolyse.in the M1h mixture downstream of the hydrolysis.
According to one embodiment, the additive(s) are chosen from alkaline reagents such as for example KOH, NaOH, KHCO3, K2CO3, CaO, Ca(OH)2, CaCO3, Ca(HCO3)2, Mg(OH)2, MgO.
According to one embodiment, a controlled quantity of steam can be injected into the hydrolysis reactor(s) and diffused through the mixture M1. This control can be carried out by measuring the temperature in the hydrolysis reactor. Thus, when the set temperature is reached, the steam injection can be stopped.
La vapeur peut être injectée :Steam can be injected:
- en amont de l’hydrolyse dans l’entrée avec un mélangeur type mélangeur dynamique, et/ouupstream of hydrolysis in the inlet with a dynamic mixer type mixer, and/or
- directement dans le réacteur d’hydrolyse, préférentiellement en partie basse de manière tangentielle pour éviter les bouchages de boues, et/oudirectly in the hydrolysis reactor, preferably in the lower part in a tangential manner to avoid sludge blockages, and/or
According to one embodiment, during hydrolysis, the mixture M1 is mixed, for example it is stirred.
The hydrolysis reactor can be a batch reactor, optionally stirred.
Before pressurization b), the treatment process may optionally include a grinding step, preferably mechanical grinding.
Dans ce dernier cas, le broyage est alors mis en œuvre sur le mélange M1h.When present, the step of grinding the mixture M1 can be carried out before, during or after hydrolysis. In the latter case, grinding is then carried out on the M1h mixture.
When the process of the invention implements a hydrolysis step combined with a grinding step, then the process of the invention may possibly comprise a step of recirculating at least a fraction of the hydrolyzate ground with the entry to the hydrolysis stage.
According to one embodiment, the hydrolysis reactor(s) comprise a recirculation loop provided with a grinding device, making it possible to introduce at least a fraction of the hydrolyzate into said grinding device and to return at least a fraction, preferably all, of the hydrolyzate thus crushed, at the entrance to the hydrolysis step.
The objective of this grinding step is to reduce the particle size of the mixture M1, typically so that the particle size of the solid fraction is less than 1000 µm, preferably less than 500 µm, preferably less than 100 µm.
In addition to the reduction in particle size which makes it possible to minimize downstream blockages, the grinding step allows homogenization of the M1 mixture and a reduction in viscosity which will allow much better control of the process parameters of the operation of hydrothermal gasification.
In the same way as the hydrolysis stage, grinding and the reduction in particle size also contribute to the homogenization of the biomass.
In reactors using high pressures, it is difficult to have mechanical agitation; the reduction in viscosity implemented thanks to the hydrolysis step and/or the grinding step also makes it possible to improve internal turbulence and therefore improve homogenization in pressure reactors.
The process according to the invention comprises a step of pressurizing the mixture M1h to a pressure ranging from 150 to 300 bars, preferably from 170 to 250 bars.
For the pressurization stage, a pump can be provided on the line leaving the hydrolysis reactor.
In another embodiment, a pump provided for this purpose feeds the pressurization pump.
The process according to the invention comprises a step of heating the mixture M1h resulting from step b) to a temperature ranging from 200 to 400°C, preferably ranging from 240 to 350°C.
The heating step can be implemented in a heat exchanger, for example by heat exchange using the flow from step g) of the process as heating fluid. The flow resulting from step g) of the process typically comprises water and gas.
Thus, a heat exchanger can be present downstream of the pressurization pump, said heat exchanger being configured to recover the heat from the flow from step g) and to heat the mixture M1h before step d ) of seperation.
Le mélange chauffé à l’issue de l’étape c) est dénommé mélange M2.The mixture heated at the end of step c) is called mixture M2.
According to one embodiment, at least one additive is added to the mixture flow M2, preferably after the heating device of step c) and before the first separation device of step d).
Parmi les réactifs alcalins on peut citer par exemple KOH, NaOH, KHCO3, K2CO3, CaO, Ca(OH)2, CaCO3, Ca(HCO3)2, Mg(OH)2, MgO.According to this embodiment, the additive(s) are chosen from oxidizing reagents or alkaline reagents. Among the oxidizing reagents, we can cite for example liquefied oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, air or permanganate salts such as potassium permanganate. Among the alkaline reagents we can cite for example KOH, NaOH, KHCO3, K2CO3, CaO, Ca(OH)2, CaCO3, Ca(HCO3)2, Mg(OH)2, MgO.
The method according to the invention comprises a first step of separating the mixture M2 resulting from step c), in order to obtain a first flow enriched in inorganic material M3 and a first flow depleted in inorganic material M4.
For the purposes of the present invention, the term "flow enriched in inorganic material" means a flow comprising a mass proportion of inorganic material greater than the mass proportion of inorganic material in the mixture M2.
For the purposes of the present invention, the term "flow depleted in inorganic material" means a flow comprising a mass proportion of inorganic material less than the mass proportion of inorganic material in the mixture M2.
According to one embodiment, the ratio between the concentration of inorganic materials in the enriched stream M3 and the concentration of inorganic material in the mixture M2 is at least 2, preferably at least 5.
The first separation step is typically implemented in a separation device comprising a supply line for the mixture M2 from step c) and two output lines: (i) a line for extracting the first flow enriched in inorganic material M3 and (ii) an extraction line for the first flow depleted of inorganic material M4.
The first separation device can be a separation device by gravity or by hydraulic effect of the cyclone type, typically provided in the lower part with a draining system operating continuously or intermittently.
According to one embodiment, at least one additive is added to the flow enriched with inorganic material M3 resulting from step d). According to one embodiment, said additive is added to the flow M3 in a recovery reactor located downstream of the first separation device.
Preferably, said additive is chosen from oxidizing reagents such as liquefied oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, air, permanganate salts such as for example potassium permanganate, or from magnesium salts such as example magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2), magnesium oxide (MgO) or magnesium chloride (MgCl2) or among alkaline reagents such as for example KOH, NaOH, KHCO3, K2CO3, CaO , Ca(OH)2, CaCO3, Ca(HCO3)2, Mg(OH)2, MgO, or among ammoniacal solutions such as ammonium hydroxide or ammonium chloride or among a mixture of these reagents.
Selon un mode de réalisation, l’additif est une solution ammoniacale provenant de l’effluent liquide M10 obtenu après refroidissement et détente du flux M8 issu de la gazéification hydrothermale (étape g) du procédé de l’invention).According to one embodiment, the additive is an ammonia solution coming from the liquid effluent M10 obtained after cooling and expansion of the flow M8 resulting from hydrothermal gasification (step g) of the process of the invention).
When it is desired to form struvite, the additive added to the M3 flow will preferably be a magnesium salt, possibly mixed with an ammonia solution.
According to one embodiment, if the flow M3 comprises at least 50% by dry weight of silica relative to the total dry weight of the first flow M3, then preferably, the method will include a step of adding an additive chosen from among the oxidizing reagents.
When a recovery device is implemented, then it is possible to provide a residence time allowing the salts targeted by the addition of said additive to be precipitated.
According to one embodiment, the mixture M1 comprises silica. According to this embodiment, the first stream enriched with inorganic material M3 from step d) comprises silica, preferably in a proportion ranging from 10 to 70% by dry weight, relative to the total dry weight of the first stream enriched with inorganic matter M3.
According to one embodiment, the treatment method according to the invention comprises a second pressurization step implemented on the first flow depleted of inorganic material M4 from step d), upstream of step e) . The flow resulting from this possible pressurization step is called flow M4’.
According to this embodiment, preferably, the first pressurization step makes it possible to bring the hydrolyzed mixture M1h to a pressure ranging from 150 to 220 bars and the second pressurization step makes it possible to bring the first flow depleted in inorganic material M4 from step d) at a pressure greater than or equal to 225 bars.
State-of-the-art hydrothermal gasification processes operate with a single operating pressure. According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the method of the invention uses two operating pressures. This two-pressure operation provides multiple advantages.
On the one hand, only a fraction of the installation is put at very high pressure (only the “second part”, after the second pressurization) so construction costs are reduced as well as installation constraints.
On the other hand, at the time of heat exchange, the temperature at which there is a substantial change in energy with a low temperature delta (delta T) is not carried out at the same time. This makes it possible to have a delta T which is the greater force of heat exchange in the exchanger and therefore a smaller exchanger.
The second pressurization makes it possible to carry out heating step e) with lower energy consumption.
The method according to the invention comprises a heating step implemented on the first flow depleted of inorganic material M4, preferably at a temperature greater than or equal to 300°C and less than 600°C.
When a second pressurization step is implemented, then said heating step e) is implemented on the flow M4' depleted of inorganic material resulting from the second pressurization step.
When the process comprises the second pressurizing step, then preferably, the heating step e) makes it possible to heat the first flow depleted of inorganic material M4' to a temperature greater than or equal to 400°C and less than 600° vs.
Heating step e) can be implemented in a heating device chosen from electric heating or indirect heating by hot gases resulting from combustion.
The method according to the invention comprises a second separation step implemented on the first flow depleted in inorganic material M4 resulting from the heating step e) in order to obtain a second flow enriched in inorganic material M5 and a second depleted flow in inorganic material M6.
When a second pressurization step is implemented, then the second separation step f) is implemented on the first flow M4' depleted in inorganic material resulting from the heating step e) in order to obtain a second flow enriched in inorganic material M5 and a second flow depleted in inorganic material M6.
According to one embodiment, the ratio between the concentration of inorganic materials in the enriched flow M5 and the concentration of inorganic material in the flow M4 is at least 2, preferably at least 5.
The second separation step is typically implemented in a separation device comprising a mixture supply line M4 (or M4' if a second pressurization is present) from step e) and two outlet lines: (i) a line for extracting the second stream enriched in inorganic material M5 and (ii) a line for extracting the second stream depleted in inorganic material M6.
The second separation device can be a separation device by gravity or by hydraulic effect of the cyclone type, typically provided in the lower part with a draining system operating continuously or intermittently.
According to one embodiment, at least one additive is added to the second flow enriched with inorganic material M5 resulting from step f). According to one embodiment, said additive is added to the M5 flow in a recovery reactor located downstream of the second separation device.
When a first additive is added to the flow M3 and when a second additive is added to the flow M5, then preferably the first additive is different from the second additive.
Selon un mode de réalisation, l’additif est une solution ammoniacale provenant de l’effluent liquide M10 obtenu après refroidissement et détente du flux M8 issu de la gazéification hydrothermale (étape g) du procédé de l’invention).According to one embodiment, the additive is an ammonia solution coming from the liquid effluent M10 obtained after cooling and expansion of the flow M8 resulting from hydrothermal gasification (step g) of the process of the invention).
When it is desired to form struvite, the additive added to the M5 flow will preferably be a magnesium salt, possibly mixed with an ammonia solution.
When a recovery device is implemented, then it is possible to provide a residence time allowing the salts targeted by the addition of said additive to be precipitated.
According to one embodiment, the mixture M1 comprises phosphorus and the second stream enriched in inorganic material M5 from step f) comprises at least 70% by weight of the total weight of phosphorus present in the mixture M1. Selon un mode de réalisation, l’additif est une solution ammoniacale provenant de l’effluent liquide M10 obtenu après refroidissement et détente du flux M8 issu de la gazéification hydrothermale (étape g) du procédé de l’invention).According to one embodiment, the additive is an ammonia solution coming from the liquid effluent M10 obtained after cooling and expansion of the flow M8 resulting from hydrothermal gasification (step g) of the process of the invention).
Le procédé de traitement selon l’invention comprend une étape de gazéification hydrothermale g).The treatment process according to the invention comprises a hydrothermal gasification step g).
Hydrothermal gasification (GH) is a thermal depolymerization process used to convert organic material present in a humid environment into a mixture of only small molecules under high to moderate temperature and pressure.
During GH, the carbon and hydrogen of an organic material are converted, thermochemically under near-critical or supercritical conditions. A part is converted into compounds with low molar masses that are soluble in water.
Another part is converted into gas products such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), dihydrogen (H2), carbon monoxide (CO), light hydrocarbons such as ethane (C2H6) and propane (C3H8).
During the stay in the hydrothermal gasification reactor at temperatures below 400°C, the organic matter undergoes, among other reactions, decomposition based on hydrolysis, similar to the reactions occurring in the liquefaction process, but much faster. Indeed, implementation in quasi-critical or supercritical conditions makes it possible to use the unique properties of supercritical water as a solvent, which allow homogeneous solvation and reaction conditions, leading to very high reaction kinetic rates. . As a result, a much shorter residence time and much higher heating rate than those of conventional hydrolysis are used, limiting or even avoiding the secondary condensation and polymerization reactions responsible for the formation of bio-oil and biochar.
When GH operates at a temperature above 400°C, radical decomposition of polymers (involving in particular decarboxylation reactions, deamination by breaking C-N bonds, and C-C or C-O cleavage) is predominant, while reforming Endothermic steam is the primary reaction pathway for converting small molecules with 1 to 3 carbon atoms into carbon oxides and dihydrogen and nitrogen into ammonia.
Methane is also produced by methanation of CO and CO2, using dihydrogen.
Consequently, GH can be considered as a decomposition process transforming the organic residues present in the M4 stream into a more easily biodegradable material and into ammonia dissolved in the liquid phase.
The processing conditions (in particular the temperature, pressure, and to a lesser extent the residence time) of the GH can be adjusted to not only produce a gas fraction containing CH4, CO, CO2 and H2 (gas synthesis), but also to produce an aqueous effluent, containing mainly on one side easily digestible compounds, in particular carboxylic acids and on the other side ammonia in the form of ammonium salt of the carbonic acids produced.
It should be noted that GH is different from hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL), particularly in that the conversion rate and level of decomposition of organic matter in HTL are not as high as in GH, even when GH is operated under moderate temperature conditions.
Under HTL conditions, water still contains HO- and H3O+ ions which initiate the hydrolysis of organic matter.
Hydrolysis only takes place on the surface of the cellulose compounds contained in the organic fraction which dissolves very little in the subcritical medium giving fairly low conversions in decomposition.
Condensation reactions (mainly including Aldol condensation, alkylation or Friedel-Craft acylation) of intermediates are an important reaction pathway, leading to the formation of a biocrude which is an oil (also called bio -oil) which can be used as fuel, i.e. biocrude contains organic molecules containing 5 or more carbon atoms, usually 8 to 16 carbon atoms. In contrast, GH's liquid product mainly contains easily biodegradable compounds.
In the treatment process according to the invention, the hydrothermal gasification step is typically implemented in a hydrothermal gasification reactor, fed at the inlet by the second flow depleted in inorganic material M6 and comprising at least one outlet for the flow M8 comprising gas and a liquid effluent, and possibly at least a second outlet for a flow M7 enriched with inorganic material.

The M7 stream enriched in inorganic material has an inorganic material content greater than the inorganic material content of the M6 stream. Preferably, the mass ratio between the content of inorganic material in the flow M7 and the content of inorganic material in the flow M6 is greater than or equal to 2, preferably greater than or equal to 5.
La séparation des flux M7 et M8 peut être mise en œuvre par séparation pouvant se produire par précipitation gravitationnelle du flux M7.The separation of flows M7 and M8 can be implemented by separation which can occur by gravitational precipitation of flow M7.

According to a possible embodiment, the hydrothermal gasification step is carried out in the presence of a catalyst. Preferably, the catalyst is chosen from metals on activated carbon, for example of the ruthenium, nickel, palladium or platinum type.
The catalyst can be in the form of a bed of solid particles within the gasification reactor.
Thanks to the separation steps d) and f) of the process of the invention making it possible to eliminate so-called “poison” compounds, the catalyst possibly used during the hydrothermal gasification step is not deteriorated by these harmful compounds which can damage , in particular deactivate the catalyst.
