Description
The present invention relates to the field of fan blades and their protection against erosion.
In the context of the present invention, we are interested in fan blades made of composite material, the composite material being formed from a 3D preform (generally a woven 3D preform) impregnated with a thermosetting resin. We are particularly interested in fan blades for LEAP engines (for "Leading Edge Aviation Propulsion"), which are generally formed of a 3D woven carbon fiber preform, impregnated with an epoxy resin.
As specified, the role of the paint layer and the polyurethane film is mainly to ensure an anti-erosion function.
As for the paint, the one currently used on fan blades made of composite material with 3D woven preform bears the reference LBYH 203, produced by Mäder. This paint has the same performance as the reference paint PRIAM 32005, produced by Mäder, but it also has the advantage of complying with the European directive REACH (regulation on the use of chemical substances, which in particular prohibits the use of chromium (VI) in products).
The behavior of this paint remains uncertain, as evidenced by the feedback from the blades in service, which show that the degradation of the finish paint, in particular on the lower surface, is significant. In particular, we note that from 1000 cycles, the forces generated in flight cause the paint to peel and tear off in patches.
The layer of paint does not currently play its anti-erosion role since it is torn off before it can be consumed by erosion.
Par ailleurs, l’application de la peinture anti-érosion demande beaucoup d’opérations pour son application et ces opérations sont particulièrement difficiles à maitriser (préparation de surface, application du primaire d’accroche, nouvelle préparation de surface, dépôt de la peinture, etc.).Furthermore, the application of the anti-erosion paint requires many operations for its application and these operations are particularly difficult to master (surface preparation, application of the primer, new surface preparation, application of the paint, etc.).
Since loss of paint is not authorized by ESM (Engine Shop Manual) quality inspection standards, a blade in service will almost always have to be repaired during a maintenance visit, involving removal and re-application of the primer assembly and coat of paint.
In conclusion, even if the paint has very good anti-erosion and impact performance, it cannot play its anti-erosion role since it tears off in flight. In addition, the application of anti-erosion paint involves numerous operations (surface preparation, application of the primer, drying then baking of the primer, sanding of the primer, application of the paint, drying then baking of the paint), generating significant manufacturing conditions which are difficult to control.
As for the polyurethane film, it is relatively thick (about 250 µm) and requires the presence of a layer of glue (about 100 µm). The assembly therefore impacts the geometry and fineness of the fan blade.
In addition, the process of repairing the polyurethane film is difficult to implement, since it requires polymerization cycles of 3 hours at 150°C, where the fan blade is limited, for its entire repair life. , at 3 hours above 120°C. Thus, only one repair is authorized with the known production cycle.
Consequently, even if the polyurethane film has very good characteristics for its resistance to impact, its anti-erosion resistance is less good than other materials and requires an extremely heavy bonding process (bonding under autoclave at 150°C ), which makes it difficult to repair.
However, preparation by sandblasting is difficult to control, given that no more than 40 μm of thickness must be removed from each face of the blade body made of composite material (whether during production or vane repair).
In the end, these stacks of successive layers, supposed to protect the composite material of the blade body from erosion, are partially ineffective and generate implementation processes that are extremely cumbersome to set up and difficult to control.
The present invention aims to provide a solution for protecting against erosion of the body of a blade made of composite material, which is more efficient than the polyurethane film currently used, and which has better behavior in flight than the paint currently used. It also aims to provide an alternative to the complex and sometimes inefficient stacking currently carried out on fan blades made of composite material to solve the problem of erosion.
- un corps d’aube en matériau composite comprenant un renfort fibreux densifié par une matrice organique ;
- des moyens de protection contre l’érosion, disposés sur le corps d’aube ;
To do this, the subject of the invention is a turbine engine blade, comprising:
- a blade body made of composite material comprising a fibrous reinforcement densified by an organic matrix;
- Means of protection against erosion, arranged on the blade body;
characterized in that the means of protection against erosion consist of a film, which covers the surface to be protected of the blade body, the film being chosen from a polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) film or an ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene film (ECTFE).
Thus, unlike the prior art, the means of protection against erosion are only a polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) film or an ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene film, excluding a polyurethane film, or a coat of paint.
Preferably, the polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) or ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene film covers the entire surface of the blade body.
As a reminder, polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) is a polymer of vinyl fluoride and is marketed under the name Tedlar TM ; ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene (ECTFE) is a thermoplastic copolymer of ethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene and is marketed under the name Halar TM .
- fourniture d’une préforme du corps de l’aube à réaliser, la préforme étant réalisée à partir de fibres ;
- placement de la préforme dans la cavité d’un moule adapté pour un moulage par transfert de résine (RTM) ;
- densification de la préforme par injection d’une résine dans le moule et chauffage du moule contenant la préforme imprégnée, avec une éventuelle mise sous pression du moule, moyennant quoi on obtient la polymérisation de la résine ;
The invention also relates to a method for protecting a turbine engine blade against erosion, the blade having a blade body made of composite material comprising a fibrous reinforcement densified by an organic matrix, the method comprising the formation of the dawn body by:
- Supply of a preform of the blade body to be produced, the preform being made from fibers;
- placement of the preform in the cavity of a mold suitable for resin transfer molding (RTM);
- densification of the preform by injection of a resin into the mold and heating of the mold containing the impregnated preform, with possible pressurization of the mold, whereby polymerization of the resin is obtained;
the method further comprising, before placing the preform in the mold, placing a film chosen from among a polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) film or an ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene film on each of the interior walls of the mold delimiting the cavity, the heating of the mold also causing the polymerization of each film.
- fourniture d’une préforme du corps de l’aube à réaliser, la préforme étant réalisée à partir de fibres ;
- placement de la préforme dans la cavité d’un moule adapté pour un moulage par transfert de résine (RTM) ;
- densification de la préforme par injection d’une résine dans le moule et chauffage du moule contenant la préforme imprégnée, avec une éventuelle mise sous pression du moule, moyennant quoi on obtient la polymérisation de la résine ;
- la préparation de la surface du corps d’aube par sablage ;
- l’application d’une couche de colle sur la surface du corps d’aube ;
Another object of the invention is a method for protecting a turbine engine blade against erosion, the blade having a blade body made of composite material comprising a fibrous reinforcement densified by an organic matrix, the method comprising the formation of the dawn body by:
- Supply of a preform of the blade body to be produced, the preform being made from fibers;
- placement of the preform in the cavity of a mold suitable for resin transfer molding (RTM);
- densification of the preform by injection of a resin into the mold and heating of the mold containing the impregnated preform, with possible pressurization of the mold, whereby polymerization of the resin is obtained;
the method further comprising, after the densification of the preform:
- preparing the surface of the blade body by sandblasting;
- the application of a layer of glue on the surface of the blade body;
- the application of a film chosen from a polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) film or an ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene film on the adhesive layer, so as to cover the surface to be protected of the blade body.
Advantageously, in the two methods above, the preform is woven in three dimensions from fibers.
In known manner, the supply of the preform may comprise the production of a fibrous blank by weaving a plurality of fibers, followed by the shaping of the fibrous blank.
The polymerization of the resin allows the formation of the organic matrix of the composite material.
Finally, the invention relates to a turbomachine equipped with a blade as described above or protected against erosion according to one or other of the methods described above.
The fact of using a polyvinyl fluoride film (or Tedlar TM film) or, preferably, an ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene film (or Halar TM film), makes it possible to simplify the process for manufacturing blades made of composite material, since the film Tedlar TM or Halar TM replaces the polyurethane film and the paint layer. The number of steps necessary for protecting the blade against erosion is therefore reduced.
In the case of an ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene film of the Halar TM type, this also makes it possible to reduce the number of repairs in service, a Halar TM film being more effective for protection against erosion than a polyurethane film or than a layer of paint of the same thickness (as we have seen above, the layer of paint comes off before being consumed by erosion).
In addition, it reduces the number of rework in production. Indeed, as we have already mentioned, in the prior art, the application of a layer of anti-erosion paint requires numerous operations, which generates anomalies and nonconformities, which require retouching in production. The absence of a layer of anti-erosion paint in the process according to the invention avoids these nonconformities. On the other hand, in the prior art, during the bonding of a polyurethane film, there are few nonconformities, but one can observe the presence of anomalies (holes) in the film. The retouching of the polyurethane film then consists of removing the damaged film, then regluing a new film, but this retouching step is long. The absence of a polyurethane film in the process according to the invention avoids these possible retouching steps.
Enfin, cela réduit le nombre d’aubes non conformes puisqu’on réduit, voire évite, les étapes difficilement maitrisables (en particulier le sablage).Finally, it reduces the number of non-compliant blades since it reduces, or even avoids, the steps that are difficult to control (in particular sandblasting).
D'autres avantages et caractéristiques de l’invention apparaîtront mieux à la lecture de la description détaillée suivante de formes de réalisation préférées de celle-ci, donnée à titre d'exemple non limitatif, et faite en référence aux dessins annexés parmi lesquels :Other advantages and characteristics of the invention will appear better on reading the following detailed description of preferred embodiments thereof, given by way of non-limiting example, and made with reference to the appended drawings, among which:

Tests have been carried out for the same thickness of paint or film (Tedlar TM , Halar TM or polyurethane). We can thus see the performance of a Tedlar TM film or a Halar TM film in comparison with a polyurethane film and a layer of anti-erosion paint.
The results obtained are collated in Table 1 below.
The prescribed minimum requirement is an erosion coefficient of 40 g/µm. Moreover, the higher the coefficient, the better the resistance to erosion.
These tests have shown that a Halar TM film wears off half as quickly as a polyurethane film of the same thickness. Thus, by halving the thickness of the polyurethane film currently used on the blades and replacing it with a Halar TM film, the result on anti-erosion would be the same as currently.
These tests also showed that a Tedlar TM film has a better erosion coefficient than a polyurethane film, but not as efficient as a Halar TM film.
As far as the paint layer is concerned, we carried out the tests on the PRIAM 32005 paint, which has performances close to the LBYH203 paint currently used for the LEAP fan blades. It can be seen that the PRIAM 32005 paint has much better anti-erosion properties than a Halar TM film, or than a Tedlar TM film, but given that it does not currently play its anti-erosion role because due to its poor adhesion, it therefore loses efficiency and requires numerous repairs.
De préférence, on utilisera un film HalarTM.Thus, a Tedlar TM film or a Halar TM film can be used to protect a blade body made of composite material against erosion. Preferably, a Halar TM film will be used.
A Halar TM film would perfectly perform the anti-erosion function, while replacing the paint layer and the polyurethane film. It also exhibits interesting impact resistance performance, which is interesting, even if impact phenomena are observed less than erosion on fan blades in service. It also has excellent fluid resistance compared to polyurethane film.
For the application of a Halar TM film to the surface of the blade, a co-moulding solution can be considered.
This solution has the advantage of eliminating the blade body surface preparation steps, the bonding steps and the paint layer application step.
It is specified that the solutions for applying a Halar TM film to the surface of the blade which are described above are also valid for the application of a Tedlar TM film.
