Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a dashboard for a motor vehicle of the type comprising a panel intended to be placed under a windscreen, said panel comprising at least one opening, the dashboard structure further comprising an aeration device including an outlet port, said outlet port being connected to said opening by an air guide duct extending from the outlet port to the opening. The invention also relates to a motor vehicle comprising such a dashboard. In the event of a collision between a pedestrian and the front of a motor vehicle, the pedestrian's head may strike the windshield, which may cause serious injury. To reduce this risk, it is known to provide a windshield arranged to starve and to sink to the dashboard in case of shock to absorb some of the energy due to impact. It is also known to provide a dashboard deforming under the effect of the depression of the windshield, for example by making the air ducts of the dashboard with a material capable of absorbing energy. However, the absorption of energy by the means described above is not sufficient to protect the pedestrian optimally in case of impact against the front part of the motor vehicle. As a result, there is always a significant risk of causing injury to a pedestrian's head in the event of a shock. One of the aims of the invention is to overcome this disadvantage by proposing a dashboard to improve the absorption of energy due to impact against the windshield of a motor vehicle. For this purpose, the invention relates to a dashboard of the aforementioned type, wherein said duct opens into the opening without being fixed thereto so as to allow relative movement of the panel relative to the duct, said movement causing the absorption of a part of the energy due to a shock against the panel. The displacement of the dashboard relative to the air guide duct increases the depression of the dashboard in the event of impact and absorb energy due to this shock.

The invention also relates to a motor vehicle comprising a dashboard as described above. Other aspects and advantages of the invention will appear on reading the description which follows, given by way of example and with reference to the appended drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic sectional representation of a dashboard structure according to a first embodiment of the invention; FIG. 2 is a schematic representation of the dashboard structure of FIG. 1 deformed following an impact against the dashboard, - FIG. 3 is a diagrammatic sectional representation of a dashboard structure according to a second embodiment of the invention; FIG. 4 is a diagrammatic sectional representation of the dashboard structure of FIG. 3 deformed following a shock against the dashboard. according to a third embodiment of the invention.
In the description, the terms front, back, top, bottom, etc. are defined with respect to the usual directions of a motor vehicle mounted. With reference to FIG. 1, there is described a dashboard structure 1 disposed under and facing a windshield 2 of a motor vehicle. The dashboard structure 1 comprises a panel 4 extending substantially horizontally from front to rear of the vehicle. Conventionally, this panel 4 is for example formed of a rigid insert 6 on which a layer of foam 8 is disposed, a lining skin 10 covering the layer of foam 8. The panel 4 comprises at least one opening 12 opening into 2. This opening 12 has for example the shape of a slot extending along part of the width of the panel 4 and allows for example the defogging of the windshield 2. For this purpose, the air can flow between an air outlet of a ventilation device (not shown), such as an air conditioning unit, and the opening 12 by means of an air guide duct 14. This conduit 14 opens into the opening 12 without being fixed thereto. That is to say, there is a clearance j between the edges of the opening 12 and the end portion of the conduit 14 opening into the opening. Such an air outlet is called a venturi outlet.
The panel 4 comprises a front portion 16 extending in front of the opening 12 and a rear portion 18 extending behind the opening 12. The front portion 16 is disposed in the vicinity and directly under the windshield 2 The front end part of the front part 16 comprises for example holding means 19 of the front part 16 with respect to the windshield 2. These holding means 19 are for example formed by staples or studs supporting the front part. 16 in the vertical direction or otherwise. The holding means 19 comprise embrittlement zones arranged to break the holding means 19 in the event of an impact and allow a displacement, in particular a vertical movement, of the front part 16 of the panel 4. Thus, in the event of an impact, if a thrust is exerted on the top of the front portion 16, it sinks down. According to a not shown embodiment, an edge element, or defogging frieze, is disposed in the opening 12 and fixed to the edges of the front portion 16 and the rear portion 18 of the panel 4. This edge element is example realized in the form of a plastic insert and forms the walls of the opening 12. An end portion of the conduit 14 extends into the element. A valve (not shown) is for example disposed in the element and disposed in the vicinity of the opening 12 of the panel 4, said valve for controlling the passage of air through the opening 12 when the defogging of the windshield is necessary. According to the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the front portion 16 of the panel 4 is formed by a rigid lining member 20, such as a plastic plastron, a portion 22 of which forms the walls of the opening 12. In this embodiment, the opening 12 is formed in the packing member 20 and the edge of the rear portion 18 of the panel 4 is attached to an edge of the packing member. This plastron 20 can also be used in the other embodiments of the invention. The front portion 16 of the panel 4 comprises a wall 24 extending under the front part 16 and forming therewith an air duct 26 to ensure the circulation of air, for example between the aeration device and ventilation outlets opening into the passenger compartment of the motor vehicle. The ventilation duct 26 is for example made of a blown material allowing the duct 26 to have energy absorption characteristics in the event of impact by crushing of said duct 26 during the driving of the front part 16, as this will be described later. According to one embodiment, the duct 14 is made of a flexible material, such as a blown material, arranged to absorb energy in the event of deformation of the duct 14. The provision of a flexible duct makes it possible to simplify the assembly of the dashboard structure 1 in the motor vehicle by allowing deformations of the conduit 14 during this assembly. According to one embodiment and as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the duct 14 is fixed to the rear portion 18 of the panel 4, for example by a tab 28 attached to the insert 6 of the rear portion 18 of the panel 4.
According to another embodiment, the conduit 14 is rigid and can be mounted in the motor vehicle before mounting the driving position. According to the embodiment shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the duct 14 extends between the panel 4 and a bottom rail 30, provided under and away from the front portion 16 of the panel 4. The duct 14 occupies substantially all the space extending between the lower rail 30 and the front portion 16 of the panel 4. According to this embodiment, the conduit 14 is arranged to deform by crashing in the event of impact against the panel 4 so as to absorb energy due to the shock, as this will be described later. The duct 14 is made in one piece or in several pieces fixed to each other in a sealed manner so as to form the wall of the duct 14. The behavior of the dashboard 1 described above is now described in case against the windshield 2 of the motor vehicle. In Figs. 2 and 4, there is shown an object 32, for example the head of a pedestrian, coming into contact with the windshield 2. The shock between the object 44 and the windshield 2 causes a depression of the windshield 2 to the front part 16 of the panel 4. The windshield 2 is deformed by becoming attenuated and already absorbing some of the energy due to impact. Under the effect of its depression, the windshield 2 comes into contact with the front portion 16 of the panel 4 and causes the depression thereof in a substantially vertical direction. The depression of the front part 16 is done after rupture of the holding means 19 and a part of the energy due to the shock is still absorbed by the depression of the front part 16 and the deformation of the air duct 26.
As the front portion 16 of the panel 4 is not fixed to the duct 14, this front portion 16 can move relative to the duct 14, which allows a deeper depression of the front portion 16 and therefore additional absorption of the energy due to shock. In the case where a defogging frieze is provided, it is arranged to exit the orifice 12 so as not to disturb the depression of the front portion 16 during an impact against the panel 4. In this case, the defogging frieze is loosely fastened to the panel 4 for example by a cord or the like in order to prevent the ejection of the frieze into the passenger compartment of the motor vehicle, this ejection being able to cause injury to the occupants of the vehicle in the event of shock.
In the case where a front plate 20 forms the front portion 16 of the panel 4, this front plate 20 can be detached from the rear portion 18 of the panel 4 in the event of impact to allow further depression of the front portion 16 relative to the portion back 18.
According to the embodiment shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the depression of the panel 4 causes a crushing of the conduit 14 which deforms by absorbing energy. This crushing allows not to limit the depression of the panel 4, in order not to limit the absorption of energy due to the depression of the panel 4. In this case, the material used to make the conduit 14 can be chosen to further promote energy absorption. The conduit 14 is for example made of a blown material. The dashboard structure 1 described above improves pedestrian protection by improving the energy absorption in the event of impact against the windshield 2 of the vehicle. This improvement is obtained by involving the dashboard 1 in energy absorption through the air guide duct 14. Such a dashboard 1 is simple to implement and mount in a motor vehicle given that it is similar to a classic dashboard.15
