Les figures 1 à 3 représentent un siège arrière 1 de l'art antérieur du type à dossier rabattable 2 et assise 3 solidaire du plancher 4 de l'habitacle du véhicule sans possibilité de basculement relativement au plancher 4. Le plancher 4 est prolongé en arrière du véhicule par un plancher 5 du coffre de rangement de ce véhicule et un tapis 6, par exemple constitué d'une moquette, couvre le plancher de coffre 5 du véhicule. En position rabattue du dossier 2 sur l'assise 3 du siège 1, la face dorsale 2a du dossier 2 présente un angle obtus d'inclinaison relativement au plancher de coffre 5 d'environ 175° de sorte que la partie inférieure 2b du dossier 2 définit une marche transversale sensiblement en escalier au-dessus du plancher 5. Cette solution connue a pour inconvénient majeur de ne pas faciliter le chargement et le déchargement d'objets du coffre arrière du véhicule du fait de la présence gênante du panneau 7 en saillie sur la partie inférieure 2b du dossier 2 et, par conséquent, de détériorer le panneau 7 au niveau de son extrémité. Pour limiter tout risque de détérioration du panneau 7, il est possible de prévoir des renforts latéraux et en bout 7a du panneau 7, mais cette solution augmente le coût de fabrication du tapis 6 et ne facilite pas les déplacements par glissement d'objets sur la face dorsale 2a du dossier 2.
