Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method of detecting and a method of correcting injector drift within an internal combustion engine. In an internal combustion engine of the type comprising at least one cylinder, each cylinder comprising an injector, the fuel is injected by the injector into the combustion chamber (so-called "direct" injection) of a cylinder or into the collector. admission to said combustion chamber (so-called "indirect" injection), to be burnt at the appropriate time of the engine cycle. The static flow rate of an injector being assumed to be constant, the quantity of fuel injected into the cylinder is directly related to the total duration of opening of the injector. The total duration of opening of the injector can accumulate, if necessary, several opening phases. A decrease in the quantity of fuel injected thus comes from a decrease in the total duration of opening of the injector. This origin results either from a delay during the opening of the injector, or from an advance during the closing of the injector, whatever the causes.
It can happen that the amount of fuel injected by an injector decreases to become insufficient and, depending on the sensitivity of the engine, come to cause a combustion instability or even a misfire. The invention aims to overcome this drawback by proposing a method of detecting a drift of the amount of fuel injected by an injector.
For an internal combustion engine comprising at least one cylinder, each cylinder comprising an injector, the invention relates to a method for detecting a drift of the quantity of fuel injected by an injector, comprising the following steps: stability monitoring combustion of the engine by means of a combustion stability indicator; detection of an injector associated with a cylinder for which the combustion is unstable or absent. According to another characteristic of the invention, the combustion stability indicator comprises a torque measuring device. According to another characteristic of the invention, the combustion stability indicator comprises a roughness detector of the engine. The invention also relates to a method for correcting the drift of the quantity of fuel injected by an injector, comprising the following steps: detection of an injector associated with a cylinder for which the combustion is unstable or absent by a method according to any of the embodiments previously described, • a gradual increase in the injection time of the said injector for a given operating point, until the disappearance of the instability or the absence of controlled combustion by means of an indicator of combustion stability. According to another characteristic of the invention, the increase in the injection time is stored and then applied, as soon as the instability or the absence of combustion has disappeared. According to another characteristic of the invention, the step of increasing the injection time is stopped beyond a certain injection time value if neither the suppression of the instability nor the suppression of the absence combustion can not be observed. Other features, details and advantages of the invention will emerge more clearly from the detailed description given below as an indication in connection with FIG. 1 which schematically illustrates an engine capable of implementing the methods according to the invention.
FIG. 1 shows a motor 1, comprising at least one cylinder 2, comprising a piston 6. Under the effect of the combustion of fuel in the cylinder 2, in a known manner, the piston 6 is set in linear motion and rotates a crankshaft 7. In the case of multiple cylinders 2, each cylinder 2 transmits the movement to the crankshaft at a date different from the other cylinders 2, the dates of said cylinders 2 often being advantageously regularly distributed over time. Each cylinder 2 comprises at least one injector 3 in charge of the fuel injection. The detection method according to the invention, applied to such a motor 1, comprises the following steps. In a first step, the method monitors the combustion stability of the engine 1 by means of a combustion stability indicator 4, 5. This stability or combustion quality indicator 4, 5 is such that, in a second step, detecting whether an injector 3 injects an insufficient amount of fuel, and especially in case of plurality of injector 3, which (or which) among these injectors is responsible and causes unstable or absent combustion. According to a first embodiment, the combustion stability indicator comprises a torque measuring device 4. This torque measuring device 4 is arranged in order to measure the torque on the crankshaft 7. Given the operation of the engine 1 described above, during the engine cycle, each cylinder 2 in turn contributes to the movement of the crankshaft 7. In normal operation, the torque measuring device thus observes a torque curve as a function of time, having a torque peak corresponding to the combustion of each cylinder 2. This curve is periodic and reproduces predictably. A variation of this curve is therefore indicative of a torque variation, itself indicative of a combustion instability. A lower torque peak is indicative of poor combustion and no peak of a misfire. Each torque peak being associated with a cylinder 2, the incriminated one is thus detected. According to a second embodiment, the combustion stability indicator comprises a roughness detector of the engine 5. Such a detector ER (engine Roughness for roughness of the engine) is known to those skilled in the art. The principle of this detector 5 is as follows. An internal combustion engine, typically comprising several cylinders, sees its crankshaft driven discontinuously following successive combustions occurring in each of the cylinders 2. Each combustion produces an acceleration. An angular position sensor of the crankshaft 7 comprises a rotating ring gear in front of a detector. An analysis of the respective durations required for the passage of different groups of teeth determined in front of the detector makes it possible to obtain an image of the instantaneous acceleration of the crankshaft 7. Knowing the nominal cycle of the engine 1, it is possible to determine when the accelerations resulting from the combustions must occur. The absence of such a normally expected acceleration is then indicative of instability or misfire. In addition, knowing the order of combustion of the cylinders 2, it is possible to determine the cylinder 2 in which instability or misfire occurred.
The IEC ("Combustion Efficiency Index") method is an equivalent alternative method of observing instability or misfiring, also known to those skilled in the art. From the detection of a drift of an injector 3 injecting an insufficient amount of fuel and the identification of the injector 3 responsible, it is possible to implement a correction. A method of correcting a drift of the amount of fuel injected by an injector 3 comprises the following steps. During a first step is detected one (or more) injector 3 associated with a cylinder 2 for which (the) combustion is unstable or absent by a detection method as previously described. During a second step, it is proceeded, for each injector 3 independently, to a progressive increase in the injection time of said (or said) injector 3. It is remarkable that an increase in the injection time of the Injector 3 increases the amount of fuel injected and corrects the problem.
The progressive increase of the injection time is carried out by the motor control, in proportion to the known nominal need of the motor control, with reference to a given operating point. This increase is continued until disappearance of the instability or the absence of combustion. This disappearance is monitored by means of a combustion stability indicator 4, advantageously identical to that used previously in the detection method. The increase of the injection time is completed, as soon as the instability 5 or the absence of combustion has disappeared. It is represented as a difference At added to the nominal opening time of the injector 3. The disappearance of the instability or the absence of combustion confirms the initial hypothesis, namely that a quantity of fuel insufficient was injected. The increase At of the injection time thus determined is advantageously memorized by the engine control. Thus the engine control can then apply this increase systematically to any command of said injector 3, to correct the problem. However, the initial hypothesis of an injection of an insufficient quantity of fuel is not necessarily justified. It is possible that the instability or the misfiring is due to another cause, for example an ignition failure. In this case, increasing the injection time has no effect and does not eliminate the problem. In order to respond to this case, it is advantageous to provide for a stop of the increase of the injection time. It is then stopped beyond a certain predetermined value of the injection time, if neither the suppression of the instability nor the suppression of the absence of combustion can be observed. In this case, the increase of the injection time is inoperative and is not memorized by the engine control. The nominal injection time remains unchanged. The invention advantageously makes it possible to correct the drifts resulting from the dispersion of the injectors between them and of a possible evolution of an injector during its lifetime. Another advantage of the invention is the speed of the detection / correction method. The detection / correction convergence is fast enough to avoid detection by another device such as a misfire detector or Malfunction Indicator Light 30 or MIL. The non-triggering of such detectors advantageously avoids the recording of a fault by the vehicle maintenance system.
