Abstract

The crash barrier shield is made from panels of glass fibre-reinforced plastic or galvanised steel sheet. It is shaped to fit over the upper edge of an existing barrier rail and extend to cover the gap beneath the rail. Curving upwards at the bottom, are used to fasten to the crash barrier posts so that there are no exposed projections which could cause injury. The shield panels are, for example, 4.2 m long for straight sections or 2.2 m long for curves, by 65 cm high. They are fitted with their ends overlapping by 20 cm, with each panel overlapping the one after it in the direction of travel so there are no exposed edges facing towards oncoming traffic.
