Abstract
Description
TITRE:
Gréement à voile à déplacement latéral
DESCRIPTION:
Side displacement sail rig
DESCRIPTION:
Indication of the technical field:
The technical field of the invention lies in the propulsion of boats using sails and the force of the wind.
State of the prior art:
Multihulls, and catamarans in particular, when they go upwind, have a reduced stability threshold beyond which the risk of capsizing and overturning the boat becomes very significant, this due to the central position of the mast. A catamaran model has been built with a mast on each of the hulls, but no rig has ever been proposed which allows the sail to be moved laterally in order to guarantee the balance of the boat.
Statement of the invention:
The sail (1) is integral with a yard (2) (mast or antenna), according to the principle of the Latin sail, suspended freely (it can be oriented in all directions) to a carriage (3) which circulates under a rail (4); this rail constitutes the horizontal part of a gantry (5) placed along the entire width of the boat, in the front part. The yard support can therefore move laterally on a line perpendicular to the main axis of the boat.
The yard is retained in its operating position by a low boom (6) whose ends are on each edge of the boat, along which it slides by means of a pulley (7) (or any other part articulated) fixed to its foot, this in order to follow the movement of the carriage under the gantry and change orientation according to the wind direction. The length of the vang is adjusted when the yard is hoisted, and remains fixed during all the maneuvers. When the boat stops, the tiller allows, by lengthening it, to bring the yard in a horizontal position. This allows the sail to be closed and the deck to be completely cleared.
Two guy lines, or bastagues (8) whose lengths are fixed, maintain the yard in its upper part. The wind bastaggages itself under tension, the leeward bastagg remains soft. During the changes of pace from the meadows to the downwind, the bastague au vent forces the carriage, on which the yard is suspended, to move to the center of the gantry. The lengths of the bastagues and the hale-bas are calculated accordingly.
The yard is therefore held at three movable points, two of which, the point of suspension from the carriage under the gantry and the foot of the yard along the hale-bas, are sliding.
Thus the only current maneuver is the sheet (9) which alone, like a conventional rig, to control the position of the sail relative to the wind direction.
Fonctionnement:
Operation:
When the boat goes upwind and we border the sheet (9) the sail moves by itself towards the leeward edge. The balance at the heel is better, the capsizing torque being reduced because the center of gravity of the rigging is lower. We find the advantages of prao without having the disadvantages. The risk of capsizing becomes practically zero, because, offset downwind of the boat, the mast, even in a horizontal position cannot cause the boat to overturn.
When the boat cuts down and that one listens to shock the yard moves to a position perpendicular to the main axis of the boat, and the chariol moves itself towards the center of the gantry. Downwind the carriage is in the central position.
The jibe intervenes as on a classic sailboat. The upwind transfer does not require manipulation of the sheet if it is secured to a mobile carriage on a rail of a conventional scheme. Otherwise two sheets are necessary as for handling a jib or genoa. The sail moves by itself under the gantry by the force of the wind.
