Abstract
Description
CELLULE ELECTROCHROME A COLORATION HOMOGENE ET
RAPIDE
L'invention concerne une cellule électrochrome dont la bonne homogénéité de couleur permet d'envisager des applications sur des grandes surfaces (fenêtres par exemple).ELECTROCHROME CELL WITH HOMOGENEOUS COLORING AND
QUICK
The invention relates to an electrochromic cell whose good color homogeneity makes it possible to envisage applications on large surfaces (windows for example).
Such cells are able to pass from a transparent state to a colored state and therefore absorbing under the action of an electric field, and are of particular interest in comfort applications such as windows for the automobile (anti-mirror glare) or the building. Thus the change of transmission and reflectivity of the material can be exploited in display devices and for "smart" windows that adapt the transmission to the intensity of daylight. More precisely, the change of state may be carried out typically by simultaneous insertion of electrons and cations or by electron and anion disinsertion in the electrochromic material, the ions being supplied by an electrolyte present in the cell.
Nevertheless, the manufacture of large cells currently faces a problem of uniformity of color and speed of response due to the resistivity of the electrodes employed.
Indeed, an electrochromic cell consists of a layer of electrochromic material coupled to an electrolyte layer, all of the two layers being inserted between two control electrodes. These electrodes are generally made by deposition of indium oxide and tin (ITO) on a glass slide for disposing transparent electrodes. These electrodes, however, have the major disadvantage of having a sufficiently high resistivity and a sufficiently small thickness to maintain the transparency of the glass slide, leading to a resistance of the order of a few tens of ohms.
Such a resistor creates a voltage drop along the electrode, resulting in low current density in areas far from the address terminals and thus color inhomogeneity and high response time. In addition, it is not possible to compensate for the high resistance of the ITO by the application of a high supply voltage under penalty of destroying the electrolyte. To overcome this problem, it would be possible to envisage using electrodes addressed head-to-tail as illustrated in FIG. 1, seeking to compensate between the two electrodes (F1) and (F2) the voltage drops within said electrodes, however such a device fails to achieve a homogeneous cell in color. It has been found that this is due to the respective resistances of the electrodes and the electrolyte layer (E) coupled to the electrochromic layer (M).
RITO=PITO X L
L x L
Lxd
R,, x a
LxL
Typically, the resistivities of the ITO and the electrolyte are respectively PITO and rE and are the following: = = 4.10-4 W.cm
P (E) = 15 W.cm
Given the passage of the current flowing between the two metal lines (P1) and (P2) for addressing the two electrodes (F1) and (F2), the resistors RITo and RE are:
RITO = PITO XL
L x L
lxd
R ,, xa
LxW
If d is the thickness of the ITO layer (of the order of 1.5 × 10 -7 cm)
a is the thickness of the electrolyte layer (to bend 10-2cm)
L being the size of the square cell (of the order of 10 cm)
gets RITO 30 and R (E) = 15. 10-4 #.
This makes it appear that the electrolyte layer is much more conductive than the ITO layer, hence a screening of the potential applied to (F2) which makes it impossible to compensate for the voltage drop introduced into the electrode (F1 ). To obtain a fast coloration, it is sought to maintain the highest possible potential on the surface of the electrode (F1).
This is why the invention proposes an electrochromic cell using means making it possible to impose a constant and high voltage on the electrochromic layer (M). More precisely, the invention proposes an electrochromic cell comprising a layer of electrochromic material (M), an electrolyte layer (E), a first electrode (F1) for applying voltage to the electrochromic material and a second electrode (F2). for applying voltage to the electrolyte layer, the first electrode being capable of being connected to a voltage source by at least one supply point located at the periphery of the electrode, characterized in that the cell comprises means for homogenizing the value of the resistance between the feed point and the different points of the layer of electrochromic material.
These means for homogenizing may comprise an array of conductors deposited against the first electrode and distributed over the surface thereof.
These means may also comprise a compensating layer (C) having a resistance in the direction perpendicular to the plane of this layer, the resistance of a unit surface element of the layer being variable as a function of the distance between the surface element and the feeding point. The variation of the resistance can be obtained by using a compensating layer (C) of variable thickness as a function of the distance between the surface element and the feed point. To obtain a variation in resistance, it is also possible to use a variable resistivity material as a function of the distance between the surface element and the feed point, for example a doped material whose doping varies locally as a function of the distance between the surface element and the point of supply.
The electrodes (F1) and (F2) are preferably transparent substrates (S1) and (S2) coated with layers of indium oxide and tin (him) and (ire).
The invention is particularly interesting for producing controlled transparency windows and variable absorption filters.

An electrochromic cell according to the invention may typically consist of two ITO coated glass slides, a layer of electrochromic material (M) and an electrolyte layer (E). Electrochromic can typically be tungsten oxide W03, capable of passing from a transparent state to a colored state by simultaneous insertions of electrons and cations such as H + or Li + ions provided by the electrolyte layer (E ). For example, a 0.3 ssm thick layer of tungsten oxide W03 is capable of changing from a transmission greater than 90% to a transmission less than 10% when the insertion rate is high. Among the other oxides dyeing by insertion of cations, mention may also be made of compounds V205 or even TiO2. The methods for producing thin layers of these oxides are conventional methods such as thermal evaporation, sputtering or sol-gel methods. Preferably the electrolyte is an elastomeric polymer or an easy-to-use gel in the dimensions imposed by a large cell size. It is thus possible to use polyoxyethylene which is charged with lithium perchlorate LicolO4. The thickness of the electrolyte is conventionally close to a hundred microns.
The transparent electrodes used in the cell according to the invention may be two glass slides coated with a deposit of indium oxide and tin. Typically, the thickness of the ITO layer is close to 150 nm in order to give good transparency to the electrodes (F1) and (F2) but leading to a sufficiently high resistance to generate a voltage drop along this electrode relative to instead of applying voltage in the case where the application of voltage is in a conductive line (psi) representing one side of the electrode (F1).
It is also possible to apply a voltage on (F1) by the periphery of this electrode as shown in FIG. 2 which illustrates a possible electrochromic cell configuration according to the invention. This exemplary embodiment uses conductive lines that can be deposited according to conventional methods of screen printing, evaporation or sputtering through a mask. It is necessary that these lines remain very thin to disturb only the transparency of the cell. The deposition can be carried out on the ITO-coated substrate or even advantageously directly on the substrate, the assembly then being covered with a thin layer of ITO.
This makes it possible to maintain a very good chemical stability of the cell.
Indeed when under tension the electrolyte ions diffuse into the electrochromic material, it is preferable that they do not come into direct contact with the conductive lines. In this example, the total resistance of the electrode (F1) can be considered as a network of small electrodes, each voltage drop generated within an elementary resistor being much smaller and making it possible to strongly homogenize the voltage applied to the electrode. electrochromic layer and thereby the coloring of the cell. The means employed in this example have the advantage of being very simple to implement.
It is also possible to homogenize the voltage applied to the electrochromic cell by introducing between the electrode (F1) and the layer of electrochromic material (M) a compensating layer (C). This compensating layer (C) may be such that the resulting resistance equal to the sum of the resistance of the electrode (F1) and the resistance of the compensating layer (C) is constant for any unitary surface element in contact with the layer of electrochromic material (M). The following example relates to a compensating layer (C) of variable thickness along a Y axis as illustrated in FIG. 3b. In this case, the electrode (F1) is energized via a metal line (P1) and the Y axis is perpendicular to said line (Pi).
In this example, the resistance of the LTO layer along the Y axis is as follows: R ITO (Y) = P ITO
Lxd Lxd
The compensating layer introduced referenced (C) in the diagram of Figure 3 must have a resistance Rc (y) along the Y axis such that the resulting resistance is constant along this axis. Thus the voltage applied on the electrochromic layer side (M) can also be constant along y, the same is true for the voltage applied on the side of the electrolyte layer (E) as it was explained above, it is why such a configuration makes it possible to obtain a homogeneous potential difference between (F1) and the electrolyte, thereby creating a uniform and rapid coloration within the electrochromic cell. Preferably, the condition R ITo (Y) + RC (Y) = R ITO (L)
Preferably it is a "corner" that is to say a layer whose thickness y = L is zero. This layer may be of resistivity glass rc ranging from about 108Ω.cm to 101lQ.cm. Typically for a square cell with a side L = 30 cm, it is possible to take a layer (C) of glass whose maximum thickness is of the order of one micrometer or even less, for example 100 nm. Such a wedge layer of variable thickness can be obtained by evaporation or sputtering using a cache that scrolls at a constant speed in front of the sample. Soaking deposit (soil / gel) can also be performed with a variable stretching speed.
The maximum thickness of the layer at the end of the wedge is first 2R1 .L Ri being the resistance per square of the layer of lTO (F1).

An electrochromic device provided with a compensation layer according to the invention makes it possible to use plates coated with ITO of higher resistivity which are less expensive and which moreover have a better transmission in the visible and in the infrared.
To compensate for any defects of the compensating layer (C) locally creating a lower resistance, it is possible to insert between the layer (C) and the electrochromic layer (M) a photoconductor layer (Pc). Indeed, in places where there is a decrease in resistance, the electrochrome opposite is more colorful, partially blocking the photoconductor made less conductive. In these places the electrons are pushed back to less colored regions; thus obtaining a compensation of the local resistance drop which makes it possible to perfect the homogeneity of color of the electrochromic cell.
