Abstract
Description
The subject of the invention is a ballast tamping unit of a railroad, of the forced vibration type comprising at least one pair of bats which are arranged on either side of a cross member, capable of vibrating under the effect of a device generating vibrations and of a clamping movement in the direction of the cross member, under the effect of a clamping device, and pivotally mounted on a frame, by means of bat-support arms, suspended to a support of a tamping machine and capable of carrying out an up and down movement to ensure the penetration of the bats in the ballast, the vibration generating device comprising a shaft carrying an unbalanced device, rotating in bearings of said chassis.
Tamping units of this type are already known. They have many advantages, for example those of having a simple, therefore inexpensive structure and relatively silent operation and requiring little maintenance. On the other hand, they have the disadvantage of a limited yield due to the difficulty, considered until now as being inherent in the structure of these units, to obtain amplitudes of vibration greater than 2 mm. In fact, it has proved necessary that the amplitude of the vibration measured at a bat be maintained in values between 2 and 5 mm for the penetration speed to be correct. If the amplitude of vibration is less than 2 mm , the penetration of the bats into the ballast is very slow, even difficult. It is then necessary to greatly increase the static penetration force generally supplied by a hydraulic cylinder, thereby introducing the constraints which will adversely affect the reliability of the tamping unit. On the other hand, to ensure a good capacity to compact the ballast, it is necessary to maintain during the tightening phase a vibration frequency of at least 45 Hz, a value which corresponds approximately to the natural frequency of the ballast. The stones being excited at this frequency, they can then nest perfectly with each other, thus creating a well-compacted area. However, for this frequency to be maintained, it is imperative that the vibration generating device has a or several flywheels which act as an energy accumulator. If these flywheels did not exist, as the bats are tightened, the frequency would decrease and the clamping force would increase. This would mean that the stones would be forced into their position and would then take an unstable equilibrium which would be destroyed on the first pass of a train. The way would be erased again and the faults that we are supposed to correct would reappear. However, the flywheels are opposed to obtaining vibrations of the above-mentioned sufficient amplitude of more than 2 mm. The amplitude of the vibrations decreases further due to the structure of the clamping device, which so far comprises two hydraulic cylinders, each associated with a bat-arm. However, the compressibility of the oil causes a reduction in the amplitude of vibration.
So far it has not been possible to find a solution to these problems.
The object of the present invention is to provide a tamping unit which is of the type defined above, but has a structure which makes it possible to eliminate the drawback of the known units while retaining the abovementioned advantages.
To achieve this goal, a tamping unit according to the invention is characterized in that two flywheels are mounted axially offset on the rotary shaft, that each flywheel has an eccentrically integrated body forming the imbalance clamping comprises a single hydraulic cylinder mounted between the bat arms above said shaft and that a synchronization bar connects the two batts so as to impose on them angular movements of the same magnitude but in opposite directions and passes tangentially over the shaft between the two flywheels.
Thanks to the arrangement of two flywheels on the unbalance axis, at a predetermined axial distance from each other and the passage of the synchronization bar above the shaft, through the space between the two flywheels it is possible to maintain a constant stuffing frequency of the desired value and at the same time ensures a position of the center of gravity of the stuffing unit above the excitation center. In fact, it has been observed in the context of the invention that if the center of gravity of the unit is above the center of excitation, an amplification of the amplitude of vibration is obtained. a mechanical connection between the two bat arms in the form of a synchronization bar makes it possible to use only one hydraulic clamping cylinder instead of two according to the state of the art, which reduces the loss of amplitude due to the compressibility of the oil in the clamping device. The invention provides a significant reduction in weight and an arrangement of the masses so that the center of gravity of the unit is arranged above the center of excitation of vibrations.

Figures 1 and 2 show a set of two pairs of tamping units 1, according to the invention, which are suspended from a support device 2 mounted on a support structure 3 of a tamping machine of a railroad track . The support device 2 and its mounting on the tamping machine are not part of the invention and are therefore not described in more detail.
It suffices to mention that this support device is movable in translation on two horizontal guide rails 5 vertically spaced from the support structure 3 and vertically using a carriage device 6 sliding on a device with a vertical upright 7.
Each tamping unit 1 comprises a pair of vibrating bats 10 intended to work on either side of a cross member 11 of a railroad track 12, as clearly shown in FIG. 1. Each bat 10 is retained in a support arm bat 13 which is pivotally mounted about an axis 14 of a chassis 15. The latter is suspended at the level of each bat support arm 13, by means of two damping supports 17, for example made of rubber, on the inner faces of the ends of a U-shaped piece 18. The two pieces 18 are part of the support device 2.
The bat arms 13 extend axially beyond their articulation to the axes 14 of the chassis by a portion 20 and are connected to the end of these portions by a hydraulic jack 21 intended to impose on the bat 10 the tightening movement against the cross member 11 in the direction for example of the arrow F1.
The bats 10 of each pair are capable of vibrating under the effect of a vibration generating device which essentially comprises a shaft 22 on which are keyed two flywheels 23, 24 of substantially circular shape so as to be axially offset and located symmetrically with respect to the median plane of symmetry P of the stuffing unit 1, as is clear from FIG. 4. Each imitation flywheel 23, 24 is integrated, eccentrically, an unbalance 25. The shaft 22 is rotatably mounted in the chassis 15 by means of bearings 27 and driven in rotation by a hydraulic motor 28 mounted on the chassis 15.
As can be seen in FIGS. 3 and 4, this chassis is essentially formed by two plate-shaped elements 30 which are arranged in parallel and each have an upward protuberance 31 at each end for fixing a damping support 17 and in its middle part a downward protuberance 32 intended to accommodate a bearing 27 of the rotary shaft 28. These two plate-shaped elements 30 are interconnected at their upper zone by a connecting structure 33.
The two bat arms 13 are connected together by a synchronization bar 35 which is articulated at one end at 36 to the extension portion 20 of a bat arm and by its other end to the other arm bat, at a location 37 located below the pivot axis 14 of this arm on the chassis. As shown in FIG. 3, in which the two bat arms are parallel, the distances between the articulation axis of the ends of the synchronization bar 35 and the corresponding pivot axis 14 are equal and the distance lines are parallel.
In this way, it is obtained that the two bat holders pivot about their axis 14 always at the same angle but in opposite directions, under the effect of the hydraulic clamping cylinder 21. It also appears from FIGS. 3 and 4 that the synchronization bar 35 extends tangentially to the rotary shaft 22 and passes over the latter between the two inertia flaps 23 and 24 (FIGS. 3 and 4) and in the median plane P.
As regards the operation of the tamping unit according to the invention, the vibrations are produced by the unbalanced shaft 22 and transmitted by the chassis 15 to the bat support arm 13 and to the bat 10.
The amplitude of the vibrations is satisfactory since the center of gravity of the unit is located above the center of excitation of the vibrations. In addition, the ratio of the mass of the unbalances to the mass of the tamping unit is favorable, which due to the relatively large radius of gravity of the unbalances also promotes the amplitude of vibration, this amplitude being proportional to the product of the ratio of the two masses and the radius of gravity.
Due to the use of a single hydraulic clamping cylinder and the otherwise mechanical connection of the bat arms, the loss of amplitude caused by the compressibility of the oil in the hydraulic system is greatly reduced.
Thus, the bats 10 of the tamping unit according to the invention are able to vibrate with a satisfactory amplitude ensuring a correct penetration speed of the bats in the ballast and at a constant frequency of for example 45 Hz corresponding to the natural frequency of the ballast and thus constituting the optimal vibration frequency.
