Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to bee feeders; these are used to provide food for bees either to supplement their supplies or to stimulate the development of colonies in the spring. The most used foods are either liquid (syrup etc ...) or solid (pollen, candy etc ...).
I1 currently exists on the market of so-called "frame covers" feeders which cover the entire surface of the hive and arise in place of frame cover boards. These have only one compartment, it is difficult to deposit liquid food if there is candy left without being bothered by the bees that consume this candy or risk drowning them.
In addition, the bottom of these feeders being flat, the hive must be properly wedged so that all the food can be taken by the bees. There are also smaller feeders with a round or square base; placed on beehives with flat roofs (most common model), these prevent correct placement of the roof (the latter being tilted on the feeder). The beekeeper is therefore obliged to place it inside a small frameless hoop placed on the frame cover. If solid food is given, it is placed in the so-called rise next to the feeder. This last method requires each visit to the hive, the handling of the hive, the feeder and the remains of solid food often in crumbs on the frame covers therefore a significant waste of time. In addition, the beekeeper coming to fill the feeder may be annoyed by bees consuming the candy.
The present invention tends to create an accessory that is easy and quick to handle, replacing the feeder and the feeder while providing space for solid food. Simple and designed in a minimum of parts, its price should remain moderate.
The invention therefore relates to a feeder which is placed on the frame covers therefore not requiring the opening of the hive when it is put in place or removed. Its perimeter constitutes a rise which fits perfectly on the hive and in turn receives the roof. It is internally made up of two compartments; the first fully accessible to bees can contain solid food; the second is a tray where liquid food will be placed. Access to the feeder is via a hatch at the bottom of the first compartment. The bees will reach the liquid food from the first compartment thanks to the arrangements allowing them to cross the partition separating the two compartments.
They should only have access to a very small area of the syrup tank and along the partition in order to avoid drowning in the syrup. A separation parallel to the above-mentioned partition will therefore be necessary but must allow the syrup to drain at its base. In addition, the entire surface of the feeder accessible to the bees will be covered to prevent them from interfering with the beekeeper during syrup distributions. An appropriately shaped cover preferably made of transparent plastic material can simultaneously fulfill the separation and cover functions.
Une variante de ce nourrisseur pourra permettre son utilisation en nourrisseur "couvre-cadres".A variant of this feeder may allow its use as a "frame cover" feeder.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the feeder whose cover is removed.
Figure 2 shows the feeder in section; in fine lines and in section are shown the frame covers and partially the hive body on which the feeder is placed.
La figure 3 représente le capot en perspective. Figure 3 shows the cover in perspective.
Figure 4 shows in section the variant of the feeder for use in "frame covers".
The main element of the feeder, shown in Figure 1 or appearing in Figure 2 item 6, is made of plastic and in one piece preferably by thermoforming. Its periphery 3 is designed so as to constitute a rise; the drop 5 provided below the shoulder 23 allows it to fit onto the frame covers 7 and the hive 8 in order to ensure good resistance to the assembly; the beehive roof will in its turn fit onto the feeder thus covering most of the sides of the feeder located above the shoulder 23.
The compartment 1 intended to receive solid food is permanently accessible to bees. Access is via the hatch 4 in the bottom of said compartment; it has a border there which will prevent the fall of food debris when handling the feeder.
The bees coming from the hive through the hole 10 existing in all the frame covers easily reach the hatch, thanks to the inclined face 12.
Some frame covers are perfectly flat, others are provided with a frame (such as 9 in FIG. 2) which has the consequence of raising the feeder relative to the frame covers; it is therefore necessary that the inclined face 12 is articulated or made of flexible plastic material in order to adapt to all cases. The base 13 of the feeder is designed so as to provide above the frame covers 7 a space 27 sufficient to allow the circulation of the bees, thus they will be able to access the hatch regardless of the position of the hole 10. In in some cases, a candy plate placed in compartment 1 would risk completely obstructing the hatch, the ribs 14 and 15 are intended to avoid such boredom. The bees access liquid food by crossing the partition 16, two of which sides are inclined and are striated or shaped in steps to facilitate their crossing.
The cover shown in Figure 3 is positioned as shown in Figure 2; its wing 19 engaging in the vertical grooves 17 and 18 and its wing 20 resting in the rebate 21 provide it with very good resistance during handling or transport. The hood once positioned determines the reduced space 22 in which the bees can take the syrup. The wing 19 of the cover does not rest at the bottom of the tank 2 in order to ensure the passage of the syrup. In addition, the bottom of this tank is inclined so as to facilitate the flow of liquids towards the side accessible to the bees.
It should be noted that the hood can also be turned half a turn (its wing 19 coming to rest against the long side of compartment 1) this in order to give access to the whole of compartment 2 for example to clean up food remains .
In order to ensure good ventilation of the hive and of the feeder, slots 24, 25 and 26 are provided which constitute, when the cover is in place, elongated orifices through which air can circulate; the height of these orifices should not, however, allow the passage of bees. Alternatively, ventilation can be provided by perforations in the cover.
The space 28 between the main part 6 (Figure 2) and the base 13 can be filled with injected foam to improve the isolation of the hive and the rigidity of the feeder.
The feeder shown in Figure 4 is a variant of the previous model allowing its use as a "frame cover" feeder; the base is flat and made of plastic or plywood, the access hatch is in this case a round hole, the fallout 5 of the previous case is eliminated. The height of the compartments is reduced so that this feeder fits entirely in the hive roof which must also fit slightly on the body as for the other known types of "cover frame" feeder.
