EXPOSURE IN A RADIOLOGY FACILITY,
AND INSTALLATION OF RADIOLOGY IMPLEMENTING
SUCH A PROCESS
The invention relates to a method of automatic exposure adjustment in a radiology installation, in particular intended to improve the determination of the optimum operating point of said installation; the invention also relates to a radiology installation implementing such a method.
In a radiology installation, it is known to fix the operating point of the installation (in particular the anode current of the X-ray generator tube) from a regulation loop comprising, as input sensor, means for measuring the average flux of X-rays after the patient or means for measuring the "brightness" of the corresponding image. The main problem with this type of adjustment lies in the fact that the radiology image is most often made up of a useful central area for which the incident X-rays have been absorbed in a variable manner by the object to be represented and of a peripheral zone, corresponding mainly to the parts of the beam which do not pass through said object, for which the X-ray has practically undergone no attenuation. However, a good adjustment is that for which the dynamics of the display chain can be exploited better in the useful central area. If the adjustment loop is sensitive to the overall "brightness" of the image, it is conceivable that a peripheral zone (it is often called: zone with open fire) which is too large can distort this adjustment quite appreciably. A commonly used solution is to remove the area as much as possible over naked heat by placing around the patient accessories that absorb X-rays (bags of water or flour) and can adapt more or less to the outline of the The invention implements another concept consisting in analyzing the image (as formed in the X-ray beam itself or in the optical path downstream of a luminance amplifier) to determine at less roughly the outline of the area with open fire and develop the control of the automatic exposure adjustment means while minimizing the influence of this area with open fire.
In this spirit, the invention therefore essentially relates to a process for automatic adjustment of exposure in a radiology installation, characterized in that it consists in analyzing the image by predetermined zones, in developing a plurality of signals of different intensities as a function of the average absorption of X-rays in the corresponding areas of the image, to process at least some of said signals and to produce an adjustment signal arising from a combination of these in which the contribution of said predetermined areas more exposed has at least been reduced.
The analysis of the image can be done on the X-ray path itself between the patient support and the luminance amplifier constituting the receiver, for example by having in this region ionization chambers or semi-cells. conductors substantially transparent to X-rays and arranged in a mosaic, for example in a matrix configuration. This analysis can also be carried out on the optical path of the radiological image formed, that is to say by taking this image between the output of the luminance amplifier and the input of the scanning camera associated with this amplifier and in analyzing this image using a mosaic of photodiodes.
Several types of signal processing are possible.
One can for example purely and simply eliminate the signals corresponding to an excessive exposure before summing the signals not eliminated for the elaboration of said control signal. We can also add non-linear weighting to all the signals before combining them. It would thus be sufficient to apply each signal to the input of a logarithmic amplifier and to add up the outputs of these amplifiers.
Furthermore, in the case of processing by elimination of some of said signals, the procedure will most often be by comparison with a threshold. This threshold may be predetermined or, on the contrary, variable. In particular, this threshold could be dependent on the control signal itself so that the elimination of any signal is made as a function of the deviation of this signal from the average "brightness" of the image. Finally, a second threshold or "low threshold" could be associated with each signal, which would be useful if the part to be radiographed included a prosthesis made of very absorbent material. The presence of a low threshold would then have the effect of preventing the automatic adjustment circuits from unnecessarily increasing the dose of X-rays administered to the patient.
The invention also relates to a radiology installation comprising means for automatic exposure adjustment, characterized in that these means comprise a sensor composed of a group of detectors arranged in a mosaic, placed on the path of a beam containing information representative of a radiological image, means for processing at least some of the signals delivered by said detectors and means for combining said processed signals to at least reduce the contribution of the most exposed areas, in this combination.
The invention will be better understood and other advantages thereof will appear better in the light of the following description of an installation in accordance with its principle, given only by way of example, and made with reference to the accompanying drawings. in which - Figure 1 is a schematic view of a radiology installation comprising the improvements of the invention; - Figure 2 is a block diagram of a signal processing circuit according to the invention.
Referring to the drawings, the radiology installation shown conventionally comprises a ray generator tube
X 11, a receiver constituted here by a luminance amplifier 12, a television camera 13 and optical transmission means 14 interposed between the display output 18 of the luminance amplifier and the lens of the camera 13. The body 15 to be represented is placed on a table 16 between the X-ray generator tube 11 and the luminance amplifier 13, to be crossed by the X-ray beam and to modulate this same beam. The modulated beam is received by the luminance amplifier which gives a visible image of it taken up by the television camera. Furthermore, the optical transmission means 14 comprise two lenses or lens systems 21, 22 between which is a mirror. semi-transparent 20 inserted at 450 relative to the common optical axis 23 of the lenses or lens systems 21, 22. The light reflected by this mirror is transmitted by a lens or lens system 24 defining a focal plane in which (or in the vicinity of which) is located a detector 25. The latter is part of an automatic adjustment chain 26 of the exposure, acting in the example described, on a control input 27 of a generator 29, for the adjustment of the high voltage of the X-ray tube 11. The control could also affect the time of the exposure.
The adjustment chain comprises the control circuit 28 described in FIG. 2. According to the invention, the sensor 25 is composed of a group of detectors 30 arranged here in matrix form. In the example specifically described, it is a matrix sensor of 4 x 4 photodiodes. Each of the sixteen detectors is connected to the input of a corresponding preamplifier 31 and the output of each preamplifier is connected to an input of a comparator 32 as well as to an input of an analog switch 33 or similar device.
The set of comparators 32 constitutes the aforementioned comparison means while the set of analog switches 33 constitutes the aforementioned selection means. The other input of each comparator 32 is biased so as to determine a switching threshold chosen for said comparator and the output of the latter is connected to the control input of the analog switch 33 which corresponds to it. The outputs of the sixteen analog switches 33 are respectively connected to the sixteen inputs of a summator 35, the output of which is connected to the input of a variable gain amplifier 36. The signal available at the output of this amplifier can be used as adjustment signal applicable to input 27. The gain of amplifier 36 depends on the number of detectors 30 validated by the comparison means and the selection means.
More particularly, the gain adjustment circuit 37 is arranged so that the gain of the amplifier is inversely proportional to the number of validated detectors. It can for example be made up of a set of sixteen feedback resistors capable of being put into service selectively by means of a corresponding number of analog switches controlled respectively by the comparators 32.
The operation of the system which has just been described is simple. When the patient has taken position on the table 16, a first radiological image is produced, received by the sensor 25 and analyzed by the system of FIG. 2. The photodiodes receiving too much light beyond a certain threshold pre-set by the comparators 32, are considered to receive light from the open fire area and the switching of the comparator 32 causes the opening of the corresponding analog switch 33. Under these conditions, only the signals delivered by the photodiodes opposite the useful area of the image will be added by the adder 35 to develop the control signal applied to the input 27. Furthermore, the gain of the amplifier 36 is corrected to take into account the number of photodiodes participating in the adjustment.
After this automatic analysis phase, the exposure parameters and in particular the high voltage of the tube 11, are possibly modified for the following shots.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment which has just been described. In particular, as mentioned above, the fixed thresholds determined by the settings of the comparators 32 can be variable as a function of the signal taken from the output of the amplifier 36. Another series of comparators defining "low thresholds" can be provided . Finally, all of the comparators 32 and of the switches 33 can be replaced by a series of non-linear amplifiers, for example with a logarithmic characteristic, the outputs of these amplifiers would then be connected to the inputs of the summator 35.
