Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to radiators, particularly for air conditioning systems of motor vehicles, or for the cooling of motor vehicle engines.
In particular, the invention relates to a radiator of the type comprising
- a series of circular section tubes,
- a series of superimposed plates, separated from each other and crossed by said tubes
an end plate having a series of orifices provided with collars in which the ex widened ends of the said tubes engage,
- a cover fixed on said end plate so as to define a collecting chamber,
- a membrane seal with a peripheral edge interposed between the edge of the end plate and the cover, and a series of orifices provided with reinforced edges, these reinforced edges being interposed between the tubes and the collars of the end plate.
A radiator of the type specified above is described and illustrated in French Patent No. 1,577,223. In this known radiator, the orifices of the membrane seal are provided with collars which are interposed between the collars of the plate d end and tubes of the radiator so as to prevent direct contact between these elements. Consequently, the collars of the seal are subjected to the mechanical stresses which are exerted between the tubes of the radiator and the collars of the end plate. In addition, said seal is in direct contact with the liquid present in the manifold of the radiator, which risks causing erosion of this seal. Furthermore, if there is a vacuum inside the collecting chamber, for example following cooling, the collars of the seal are stressed in tension.
The object of the present invention is to avoid these drawbacks by producing a radiator which has improved characteristics of resistance and of ease and speed of assembly.
To achieve this object, the invention relates to a radiator of the type specified at the start, characterized by the fact that said collars of the end plate each have an end part in direct contact with the corresponding tube and a base part, of an enlarged diameter, inside which is received the respective reinforced edge of the gasket, as well as by the fact that this radiator also comprises a metal gasket plate disposed on the side of the seal facing the collecting chamber and also having a series of holes in which the enlarged ends of the radiator tubes engage, said seal being stamped di rectetient on the packing plate .
Since the radiator according to the invention is designed so that the collars of the end plate and the corresponding tubes are in direct contact with each other, these elements exchange directly between them the stresses which are exerted during the use of the radiator, without these stresses being transmitted to the seal.
In addition, the press-earn plate which covers the seal on the side facing the collecting chamber protects this packing against the risk of erosion caused by the liquid circulating in the collecting chamber.
Said stuffing plate also has the function of preventing the reinforced edges of the orifices of the sealing gasket from being subjected to tensile stress in the event that there is a vacuum inside the collecting chamber. Said stuffing box plate is, in fact, pressed against the packing by the enlarged ends of the radiator tubes.
Another advantage of the radiator according to the invention lies in the fact that the packing plate on which the packing is directly stamped confers a good dimensional stability on said packing, thus facilitating its transport and its storage and allowing to assemble it quickly and so precise.
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will be highlighted by the description given below with reference to the attached drawings, provided solely by way of non-limiting example and in which
Fig. 1 is a schematic perspective view of a radiator according to the invention, the cover of which is shown, for reasons of clarity, in the disassembled position.
- Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a detail of 'Figure 1, with the cover in the mounted position.
- Fig. 3 is a view on an enlarged scale of a detail of FIG. 2.
In FIG. 1, the reference 1 designates as a whole a radiator which can be used for air conditioning installations of motor vehicles. The invention is also applicable to radiators for cooling the engines of motor vehicles.
The radiator 1 comprises a series of tubes 2 of circular section which pass through a series of plates 3 superimposed and separated from each other.
The reference 4 designates an end plate having a series of orifices 5 provided with collars 6 (see FIGS. 2 and 3) inside which the ex-, engage.
trémités élargies des'tubes 2. Ces extrémités sont rendues solidaires de la plaque d'extrémité 4 par simple expansion mécanique.widened hoppers of the tubes 2. These ends are made integral with the end plate 4 by simple mechanical expansion.
On the end plate 4 is fixed a cover 7 which defines a collecting chamber 8. This chamber is divided into two compartments Sa, 8b, by an internal partition 9 of the cover 7, said compartments communicating respectively with an inlet connector 10 and with an outlet connector 11. The radiator shown by way of example in the attached drawings is, in fact, of the type with U-shaped circulation, in which the tubes 2 communicate with each other in pairs at the opposite ends to those shown in FIG. 27 so that the liquid which enters the compartment Sa through the inlet connector 10 passes through the tubes 2 which communicate with this compartment until reaching the opposite end of the radiator, passes through the remaining tubes and out of the radiator through compartment 8b and outlet fitting 11.
Of course, the invention is also applicable to radiators in which the inlet and outlet connections for the fluid flowing in the radiator are arranged on the opposite ends of the latter.
The edge of the cover 7 is fixed - in a manner already known - to the end plate -4 by folding peripheral appendages 12 of the end plate 4.
The radiator 1 further comprises a membrane seal 13 having a peripheral edge 14 interposed between the edge of the end plate 4 and the cover 7.
The membrane seal 13 also has a series of orifices 15 provided with reinforced edges 16.
Each collar of the end plate 4 comprises an end part 6a in direct contact with the corresponding tube 2 and a base part 6b, of an enlarged diameter. each of said reinforced edges 16 of the membrane seal 13 is interposed between a tube 2 and the base part 6b of the corresponding collar 6 of the end plate 4.
The reference 17 designates a metal packing-gland plate placed on the side of the sealing gasket 13 which faces the collecting chamber 8.
The press-packing plate 17 also has a series of orifices 18 into which the enlarged ends of the tubes 2 of the radiator engage. The membrane seal 13 is assembled with the packing plate 17 by direct stamping on this plate. To improve the assembly of the plate 17 with the lining 13, the latter is provided with appendages 19 which are inserted in respective auxiliary orifices 20 of the packing-plate 17.
To carry out the assembly, the first operation consists in fixing the end plate 4 to the tubes 2, by mechanical expansion of the end parts (designated by 2a) of these tubes, so as to keep them coupled with the end parts. 6a of the collars of the end plate 4. The second operation consists in mounting the seal 13 with the plate 17 integral with the latter and, finally, there is produced a mechanical expansion of the end part 2b of the tubes 2, so as to fix the plate 17 to the tubes 2 and to press this plate against the lining 13.
Direct contact between the tubes 2 and the collars 6 of the end plate 4 makes it possible to avoid the mechanical stresses between these elements being transmitted to the seal 13. In addition, the seal plate 17 protects the lining 13 against the risk of erosion caused by the liquid flowing in the collecting chamber 8. The plate 17 also prevents the reinforced edges 16 of the lining 13 from being subjected to tensile stress in the event that a depression occurs in the chamber collector. Finally, the packing plate 17 gives good dimensional stability to the membrane seal 13, thus facilitating its transport and storage and allowing it to be mounted quickly and precisely.
