Abstract

A hydraulic jack comprises a body (1) forming a cylinder (2) in which a piston (3) slides. The piston forms part of a shaft (4) which is extended by a toothed (5) rack (4a). The rack and shaft have a blind hole (6) in which a second rack (7) is able to slide. The teeth (8) on this rack are located in the same plane between the two toothed parts of the rack housing it. A helicoidal spring (10) is located in the blind hole to press its ends against the base of the hole and against the end of the second rack. The teeth on the two racks engage the teeth (11) of a pinion (12) carrying a cam (14) and which rotates on a shaft (13). Operation of the jack causes pinion and cam to rotate and the spring action acts on second rack to keep the teeth in contact with the teeth on the pinion to take up any play.
