Abstract

Heat energy is recovered from blast furnace and steel works slag. Molten slag, converted into granules, falls through rising air in a cooling tower, which prevents sticking together as they solidify. Air enters the base of the tower through a fluidising bed, extracts some heat, and is recirculated from the top through a heat exchanger. Fluidised granules are lifted by a conveyor to the top of a multi-stage cooling tower. At each level they are fluidised by rising air, which extracts more heat, emerging cooled at the bottom. Again the air is extracted, passed through a heat exchanger and recirculated to the base of the tower. In this system no other material is needed for the fluidised beds than the slag granules, and hence no sorting is required after the initial cooling. If the heat exchangers for the two towers are connected in series very hot water can be produced. For the second heat exchanger, it is possible to substitute a preheater for scrap, or to incorporate a thermal reservoir to preheat scrap when no slag is available.
