Abstract

Protective padding for sports clothes etc. are made as a combination of an external fabric and a layer of cellular (polyethylene or polyurethane) material moulded to provide a plain or concave internal face with controlled variations of thickness and external contours. The composite pad has a continuous thin border to be stitched or stuck to the supporting garment. Used for providing protection against local shock or wear on e.g. ski suits etc. The external fabric is uniformly bonded over the core foam surface to inhibit tearing or delamination by local snagging. Opt. the foam layer is constituted or moulded to produce zones of differing densities, and/or differing thickness, for ease of localised flexing. The internal face of the foam layer may have an integral or ancillary non-cellular skin. More readily produced than conventional tailored padding, more robust than pads with separate cores and covers, more adaptable than pads of constant thickness.
