Abstract

The arrangement uses a key operated barrel lock which immobilises the vehicle when the key is withdrawn, and has a mechanical lock to prevent withdrawl of the key without a separate action by the driver. This prevents hazards due to accidental withdrawl of the key and the consequent immobilisation of the vehicle. The mechanical lock prevents rotation of the key to the position where it can be withdrawn, and is held in the locked position by a spring. The lock is released by a mechanical linkage or a solenoid which draws the lock clear. The linkage or solenoid may be controlled by an attachment to the handbrake lever having an electrical contact placed so that the solenoid is energised when the handbrake is engaged. A signal light may be connected across the solenoid to indicate that the key is free.
