Abstract

The electronic driving mirror has a television camera secured on the rear bumper of a car and providing a field of view of about 180 deg., to ensure that both sides of the road are visible at a distance of several metres. The camera is coupled through a cable to a television screen by way of an image inverter, which is located close to the driver and may be switched out of circuit if desired. The camera may be pivotably driven by a motor controlled by the driver by means of a joy-stick tyre lever. The camera may be positioned centrally of or to one side of the car.

Description

L'invention concerne un dispositif rétroviseur électronique. The invention relates to an electronic rearview device.

Rearview devices known to date use one or more mirrors allowing, by their surface, their shape, and / or their arrangement, to obtain a view as wide as possible of the space situated at the rear of a vehicle. They have the shape either of a simple mirror or, more rarely, of a periscope.

In all cases, their position is preset to obtain an image of the sector whose situation must be known most frequently.

These devices have the disadvantage of having one or more blind spots in the rear view. To overcome this drawback, the most frequently used solution is the arrangement of several mirrors, the assembly of which makes it possible to sweep substantially the entire sector at the rear of the vehicle, which results in considerable bulk inside and outside. of the vehicle.

The invention aims to eliminate this defect and relates to a rear view device, characterized in that it is constituted by a television camera associated in closed circuit with an image receiver, the camera being oriented towards the rear and the receiver of images being placed on the dashboard in the driver's field of vision.

According to a first embodiment, the television camera comprises a large, angular optical device, allowing it, while remaining stationary in position to cover a field wide enough to perceive all of which the vehicle is traveling behind it. vs
According to a second embodiment, the camera is pivotally mounted on a support and is controlled by any appropriate means allowing it to scan the entire field of vision sufficient to go from one side to the other of the road on which the vehicle.

Figure 1 - une vue schématique, en plan, représentant le premier mode de réalisation ;
Figure 2 - une vue schématique, en plan, représentant le deuxième mode de réalisation ;
By way of non-limiting example, and to facilitate understanding of the invention, the accompanying drawings show:
Figure 1 - a schematic plan view showing the first embodiment;
Figure 2 - a schematic plan view showing the second embodiment;
Figure 3 - a circuit diagram of the closed circuit television.

Referring to Figure 1, we see that on the rear bumper 2 of the vehicle 1, is mounted a fixed electronic camera 3 having a field angle A of about 80, such that the two sides of the road are visible at a distance of the order of a few meters. The camera 3 is preferably placed on the side of the vehicle located towards the center line of the road.

This electronic camera 3 is connected by a wiring 3a to a screen 6 analogous to a television screen with, possibly, the interposition of an internal image device 7.

This arrangement allows the driver-r of vehicle 1 to have a permanent complete vision, without any blind spot, towards the rear of his vehicle. Instead of mounting on the rear bumper, a housing can be provided in the left rear signal light unit.

On the other hand, since the interior of the images is provided with a control allowing it to be plugged in or unplugged at will, this device makes it possible to carry out any reverse gear without the driver having to turn around completely. even.

The image given by a camera with a wide angle of vision may not be precise enough, it is possible, according to an alternative embodiment represented in FIGS. 2 and 3, to employ a camera pivotally mounted on a vertical axis, so as to be able to scan the entire field of vision.

The camera can be controlled so as to oscillate continuously between two extreme positions II and III, but it can also oscillate only on command.

In this case the motor device 4, which can be a small electric motor or a solenoid acting on an appropriate linkage (which is not shown, because it is within reach of any person skilled in the art, is arranged so that in rest position the camera 3 is in position I its optical axis both parallel to that of the vehicle.

The drive means 4 is controlled by a lever 5 which can occupy a middle position and two extreme positions I and II (FIG. 3).

When the lever 5 is put in position II (or III), the motor means 4 causes the displacement of the camera 3 which comes in position II (or III).

In this case also, the circuit can include an image reverser 7 controlled by a switch 7a. The operation of the camera 3 can also be controlled by a switch 8.

This arrangement allows the driver to direct the camera 3 at will to the area he wishes to inspect at the rear of his vehicle.

According to an alternative embodiment, the control of the movement of the camera 3 can be coupled with the control 9 of the direction change lights 10.

In the examples shown in Figures 1 and 2, the camera 3 is mounted on the rear bumper of the vehicle 1, but it is obvious that it can be mounted in any suitable place. In particular, if the vehicle 1 is used to tow a trailer or a caravan, the camera 3 can be removable so that it can be placed at the rear of the trailer or the caravan by extending the driver 3a.

In the examples shown, the image receiver 6 is placed on the dashboard, but it can be placed in any other place visible to the driver,
The camera can also be equipped with a variable focal length arrangement, commonly called "Zoom", the control of which, not shown, can be located on the dashboard, which allows the driver to see the view towards the rear in order to have a better appreciation of the distance at which a vehicle traveling behind it is located.

The camera can also be equipped for night vision, which allows the device to be used at any time.
