Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a measuring instrument intended for checking the flatness of a surface or for measuring a surface profile.
To control the flatness of a surface, it is already known to use a rectified ruler of prismatic shape which is put in place above the surface to be checked, the topography of which can thus be evaluated using shims standards that are inserted between this ruler and the surface. This way of proceeding, which amounts to a trial and error check, leads to an inconsistent and long measurement and requires a high professional quality of the person performing the check. However, in a particular application of such a rule, for example in a automobile repair where the flatness of the cylinder head surfaces of vehicle engines must be checked, such constraints are very troublesome and that is why the present invention aims to provide a measuring instrument of the type indicated above, the use of which is convenient while providing rigorous and precise control over the flatness of a surface.
It therefore relates to a measuring instrument, in particular for controlling the flatness of a surface, characterized in that it comprises a rule formed by two parallel bars spaced from one another and together defining a reference surface on the side of the rule opposite the surface to be examined, said rule also comprising two support members allowing it to be placed on said surface to be examined, a first of said support members, which are in relative position adjustable along said rule , defining two support points thereof, aligned transversely with respect to this rule, while the second support member defines a third support point, and in that there is further provided an indicator provided with a key intended to explore the surface to be examined and extending partly between the two bars, said indicator being fixed on a slide intended to slide along said rule while being in abutment on said reference surface.
When the ruler of the measuring instrument according to the invention is placed on a surface to be examined, the reference surface is at a predetermined distance from this surface to be examined and the topography thereof can then be easily noted by moving the slide fitted with the indicator along the ruler which is given great stability thanks to the three support points of its support members.

Other characteristics and advantages will emerge from the description which follows, made with reference to the appended drawings in which
Fig. 1 is a front elevation view of the measuring instrument according to the invention;
Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are cross-sectional views of the ruler of the measuring instrument, taken respectively along lines 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 of FIG. 1; and
Fig. 5 is also a cross-sectional view of the rule showing a variant of one of the support members thereof.
According to the embodiment shown in
Fig. 1 to 4, the measuring instrument of the invention comprises a rule 1 consisting of two parallel bars 2 and 3 which, in this example, are of rectangular section and two large faces of which face each other. Bars 2 and 3 together define a reference surface 4 on the side of the rule 1 opposite to the surface S to be examined.
The bars 2 and 3 are rigidly assembled using screws 5 which pass respectively through their ends and which are screwed into bracing pieces 6. In this way, a space 7 is provided between the bars (see in particular Figs. 3 and 4).
The measuring instrument also includes two support members 8 and 9, the first of which will be examined first.
The support member 8 is formed, in the example shown, by a cylindrical block 10 whose axis extends transversely relative to the bars 2 and 3 and which is intended to rest on the surface S to be examined by two portions of generator Ila and llb forming support points aligned along a line which is transverse with respect to bars 2 and 3. The cylindrical block 10 has a stepped transverse hole 12 interrupting the support generator and serving to receive a fixation screw 2a which is engaged in the bracing block 6 provided at one of the ends of the rule 1. In the example shown, the support member 8 is therefore fixed relative to this rule.
The support member 9 which is adjustable along the rule 1 has a threaded axis 13 (Fig. 3) which ends, on the side of the surface S to be examined, by a key 14, preferably of circular section. On this threaded rod 13 is engaged a first ring 15 internally threaded and provided with a flange 15a of small diameter which engages with play in the space 7 formed between the bars 2 and 3. On the opposite side, the ring also includes a peripheral flange 15b which defines a chamber 16 in which is housed a locking nut 17 by means of which the ring is secured to the threaded rod 13. Finally, the ring 15 defines a bearing surface 18 which, by two portions in a segment of a circle, rests respectively on the faces of the bars 2 and 3 defining the reference surface 4.A second nut 19 is screwed onto the threaded rod 13 on the side of the surface S to be examined. This nut which has a tightening role includes a flange 19a which also engages with play in the space 17 formed between the bars 2 and 3. It will be noted that when this support member is tightened on the bars 2 and 3, which is done by tightening the ring 15 relative to the nut 19, the distance between the reference surface 4 and the surface to be examined S, at the level of the support 9, can be adjusted to a predetermined value, and in particular to a value identical to that of the distance separating the generator 11a, 11b from the cylindrical block 10, from the other support member 8 from the reference surface 4.
The sectional view of Fig.4 shows a slide 20 formed by a ring in which is engaged a cylindrical sleeve 21 of an indicator 22, otherwise conventional, for example a "comparator" comprising a key 23 intended to come into contact with the surface S to be measured and able to slide longitudinally inside the body of the indicator 22, the sliding movement having the effect of driving a transmission mechanic connected to a needle 24 cooperating with a graduation 25 calibrated in units of distance. The sleeve 21 can be locked inside the ring 20 using a locking screw 26 which passes through it radially and which acts on a split elastic ring 27 engaged in the bore of the ring.
As shown in Fig. 5, it is possible, according to a variant, to replace the cylindrical block 10 of the preceding Figures by a block 10A of prismatic shape, block in which are engaged pins 28 and 29 defining at this point of the rule two aligned support points transversely with respect to it.
To examine a surface, simply place the ruler on it by adjusting the distance between the support members 8 and 9 by sliding the support member 9 along the rule. Once this member is locked in position, It suffices to measure the topography of the surface S, to slide the indicator 22 along the ruler and to read on the graduation 25 the deviations of the needle 24. It is therefore seen that this control can be carried out in an extremely convenient manner and fast without requiring considerable knowledge and professional skill. Furthermore, it can be noted that the rule is laid on the -surface S very stably while the slide 20, the part of which is engaged in space 7 between bars 2 and 3 is well guided, allows easy movement of the indicator.
Finally, it can be noted that it is also possible to place the support member 9 between the support member 8 and the indicator 22, this yes makes it possible to measure or possibly control the dimension of a point beyond the portion of the reference plane defined by supports 8 and 9 (see broken line representation of rig.l). It is also possible, using the instrument according to the invention, to measure a surface comprising bosses or cavities over its extent.
Of course, in the context of the invention, it is possible to provide many variants. Thus, for example, the bars 2 and 3 which, in the example shown, have a rectangular section and are placed on edge relative to the surface S to be examined, can have a circular or other section, by defining by their two generators, the furthest from this surface to be examined, the reference surface 4.
In this case, the bearing faces, both of the slide 20 and of the support member 9, must then have a suitable shape, in V for example, - overlapping the bars thus designed.
