Abstract

The clockwork drive for a toy has its spring wound up by pushing the toy to and fro with its wheels in contact with a surface, so that as they are turned in one direction, they wind up the spring. When sufficient force has been accumulated in the spring, the gearing automatically connects itself in a different manner so that the wheels are rotated in the opposite direction, resulting in the vehicle travelling forwards when in contact with the surface. This action is due to a tilting action by the body of the vehicle which carries a given gear train, and which allows a further gear train mounted on the wheel axle to be engaged or disengaged in the two positions. The drive is for a toy vehicle with front and rear wheels. The gearing and winding system allows the spring to be more fully wound than other designs, giving a longer run for the vehicle.
