Abstract

Method of depolarising the positive electrode of cells and accumulators using the capture of oxygen of the air at ambient temp. by a first body which forms a peroxide by self-oxidn., and returns to its initial state under the action of a second body which accepts positive charges, is described, in which the second body is raised by the redox reaction to a higher oxidn. state in which it is a good depolariser. Specifically the first body is a hydrocarbon capable of forming a peroxide or a hydroperoxide, esp. cumene, or a similar cpd. e.g. cyclohexene or triphenyl methyl. The second body is e.g. potassium ferrocyanide or potassium chlorate. The volume of the positive electrode is much less than that of the porous carbon electrodes of prior art. cells utilising the novel electrode return to their nominal emf. very quickly after a heavy current has been drawn from the cell.
