Abstract

The tin plate elements are in plastic frames with even numbers of mating holes in opposite edges to act as feeds and drains for electrolyte and oxygen loaded gas, these be ing joined by microchannels on the faces of the frames, to the active elements of the cell. A bipolar electrode with oxygen reduction catalyst (carbon in plastic, hydrophobic binder) on its non-porous positive face is in direct contact with a microporous membrane. The negative face, esp. of zinc, is oxidised during discharge and at least one intermediate layer between it and the membrane, acts as a filter to keep oxide from the electrolyte channels and prevents dendritic crystals puncturing the membrane.
