Abstract

Drying cylinders for papermaking and similar machines are housed in a partly enclosed structure in which there are, (a) sections or modules; (b) a support structure formed by tubes of square or rectangular cross-section running lengthways, transversely and vertically, along which the hot air circulates towards outlet pipes, provided between the cylinders of each section; (c) an inlet fan and an outlet fan for each section; (d) an inclined partition dividing the cowl into a heating zone and a cylinder zone; (e) a heat recovery unit and a steam heating unit in the heating chamber; (f) a conduit for transferring humid air from the cylinder zone to the heating zone; and () a flap valve for controlling the passage of air between the zones; all these pieces of equipment being located inside the actual housing. This cheapens the cost and reduces the space occupied by the battery of drying cylinders and its heat recuperator. The thermal efficiency is much higher since the return passages are inside the cowl instead of outside as normally. The heat exchanger for the fresh air circulating inside the cowl is also an improvement.
