Abstract
The parent patent describes a liquid metal-cooled fast breeder reactor, in which the core is contained inside an internal tank in the liq. metal bath and the liquid metal is circulated by coolant pumps through the core and heat exchangers. The wall of the internal tank is equipped with a number of horizontal ribs, fixed to the inner face of the tank and extending obliquely upwards, the upper edge of each rib being above the lower fixing point of the next rib. The ribs and wall thus form a series of coolant troughs or gutters. Improvement is that the troughs have outlet holes near the bottom and a pump circulates coolant from the region outside the tank into the highest trough, so that the coolant falls as a cascade from trough to trough down the inner face of the tank. All the troughs, including those above the varying liq. level inside the tank are continuously supplied with relatively cool coolant from outside the tank.
