Abstract

Prodn. of feedstuffs and sugar-contg. solns. comprises hydrolysing opt. comminuted vegetable material with acid under elevated pressure at >100 degrees C. The obtd. soluble product is extracted and removed and processed. The insoluble residue is oxidised, opt. in presence of catalyst. Pref. the volatile cpds. (e.g. furfurol, acetic acid, formic acid) formed in the hydrolysis are removed with steam during and/or after the extn. of soluble product. The water content of the insoluble residue is pref. reduced by pressing before and/or after the extn. The cellolignin of vegetable matter is converted in high yield into a carbohydrate feedstuff, esp. for ruminants with a high fodder value (80-85%); typically 1 tonne of bagasse gives a feedstuff equivalent to 560-595 kg of maize. The obtd. aq. sugar soln. can be treated to recover sugars esp. xylose, which can be hydrogenated to xylitol, an anticariogenic agent and sugar substitute for diabetics. The sugar soln. can also be used as nutrient for growth of yeasts for use as protein for human and animal foods. Volatile components can be recovered. Agricultural wastes, e.g. straw, bagasse and maize cobs, can be utilised.
