Abstract

The parent patent described the recovery of Zn from dross obtd. during hot dip Zn coating, or from scrap arising in refineries or foundries mfg. Zn. The novelty in this addn. is that dross and/or ash from galvanising baths is electrolytically dissolved by making the dross the soluble anode, the Zn dissolving via the reaction Zn right arrow Zn2+ + 2e-; whereas the cathode is formed by a vessel (c), on whic the reaction 1/2 O2 = H2O + 2 e- right arrow 2OH- occurs. An alkaline electrolyte is used, and the resulting soln. is circulated between the vessel(c) and an electrolysis cell, in which the reverse reactions occur so Zn is deposited on a cathode. The anolyte in the electrolysis cell is pref. circulated through vessel(c) to enrich the anolyte with Zn; vessel(c) is pref. made of stainless steel.
