Abstract

A metal carbide has compsn. (MoxWx'Crx")Cz where in mole fractions x >=0.2, x' is 0-0.8, x" is 0-0.18 when x 0.8 and is 0 when x is >0.8 and z is 0.6-0.73. The compsn. is a two phase mixt. of M2C and MC solid solns., M representing the metal, the average spacing between the M2C, and MC grains being 4 mu. The two phase mixt. is formed by solid state decomposition of eta M3C2 or alpha MCl-x conclude solid solns. Used as wear resistant facings instead of fused WC-W2C for earth moving, oil chilling and mining applications. They can also be bonded with low melting metals. Also used as welding electrodes combined with Fe, Ni or Co based alloys. The fine grained compsn. has a hardness and abrasion resistance equal to or superior to WC-W2C, and can be produced more easily to a consistent hardness and quality.
