Abstract

The oxide scale formed on pieces of steel reheated prior to forging is removed using high pressure water jets. The plant is associated with a single forging machine and works entirely automatically so that all the steps for spraying water onto each piece, then returning the plant to its original state are put into operation and succeed each other automatically each time a piece is intercepted by a beam from a photoelectric cell or similar detector placed alongside the track along which the pieces move between the reheating furnace and the forging machine. Using individual water spray units avoids the variation of properties obtd. when one reservoir feeds a number of spray units due to variation of pressure. It uses much smaller amts. of water at reduced pressures which in the case of explosion reduces the risks to personnel. Plant costs are also considerably reduced.
