Abstract
The pile is formed by implanting pile tufts into a layer of adhesive coated on the backing. After the implantation, the viscosity of the adhesive is lowered by heating and the outer edges of the rufts are subjected to equalisation by compression whilst the adhesive is less viscous. Pref. the compression process causes individual displacement of the tufts towards the backing, with little or no displacement of the free ends of the tufts so that the part of the tufts submerged in the adhesive may just touch the backing. The process is effected on the moving pile fabric continuously, and the duration of contac of the compression element is limited according to the speed of the compression motion, so that there is no appreciable drag on the fabric.
