Abstract

Softening of large pieces or grains of powder of refractory super alloys contg. >=50 wt.% of Ni, Co, and/or Fe, contg C and additional metals forming at least ore hardening disperse phase, consists of heating the pieces in a hydrohalogenated atmos. with a water vapour content 10 ppm. to decarburise the surface and to remove from the surface hardening elements that form volatile stable halides. Used in the construction of tubro machines. Pieces of different shapes, or particles, can be made separately by powder moulding techniques, then surface softened, using the method of the invention, and finally joined together by form a more complex shape without expensive machinery.
