Abstract

The tongs are used for removing the cork from a bottle of champagne, without it being forcibly ejected. It comprises two jaws (1, 2), pivoted together (3) at the front and provided with handle grips. The jaws close around the cork, just below the head. Their inner faces (5) are serrated (20) and curved to fit round the cork and each face has a double angle. The upper (16) is larger than the lower and, as the jaws close, the shorter angle slides the cork out. Immediately, the apex (18) of the double angle bites into and grips the cork to enable it to be twisted out.
