Abstract

Gudgeon bolts are set in place automatically by first screwing the bolt into a gudgeoning support head and screwing the nut of the bolt right up to the head. The suspended head carrying the gudgeon bolt is then moved in line with the receiving thread. The end of the gudgeon bolt is then lowered to the receiving thread by balancing the gravitational force acting on the bolt until the end engages in the thread. The bolt is screwed into the thread then the bolt is put under tension by applying traction to the support head. Finally the nut is screwed down on the bolt, the tension relaxed and the support head unscrewed from the bolt. The process is reversed for removing the gudgeon bolt. All of the tightening or loosening of the bolt by the machine is controlled by a sequential and synchronising control system. Process is partic. suitable for tightening or slackening heavy gudgeon bolts in chemical, petroleum or nuclear industry reactors or vessels. The risk of damage to the first threads of the bolt and receiving thread by manual handling is obviated.
